Red Sox to call up newly acquired Taylor Motter
The Red Sox will call up newly acquired infielder Taylor Motter. Boston acquired him this week after claiming the 31-year-old off waivers from the Rockies.
The #RedSox today added INF Taylor Motter to the active major league roster. He will wear number 30.
To make room for Motter, the Red Sox optioned catcher Connor Wong to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against Cleveland.

The addition of Motter to the big-league club comes on the heels of another COVID-19 case. Rookie outfield Jarren Duran tested positive and was placed on the COVID-related injured list.
The Red Sox had called up catcher Connor Wong for Friday night’s game. Wong was optioned back to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Motter played 13 games for the Rockies this season. The right-handed hitter hit .150 with the Rockies, he collected three hits in 20 at-bats. Motter is a career .189 hitter with 10 homers, 37 RBIs in 433 plate appearances in the majors.
Alex Cora spoke highly of Taylor Motter
Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke highly of the newly acquired infielder.
“Athletic, versatile,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It’s one of those situations where we’re at right now. I think if we recognize talent, it would be good to add it to our structure. We don’t know what could happen in two hours or three hours or tomorrow. He was having a good season in Triple A, got called up by the Rockies and he got put on waivers so we jumped into the opportunity. So we’ll see. There’s obviously other stuff that goes on before he joins us. So we still have to wait.”
Motter provides Boston additional infield depth especially at short stop. The Red Sox are still without Xander Bogaerts, he remains out due to COVID-19.
