Trader Brad at it again! Celtics trade for Juancho Hernangomez

Brad Stevens has come out and proven he means business for the Celtics this upcoming season. Sure, the Celtics won’t be a heavy favorite to come out of the Eastern Conference. But they’ll be fun to watch and will be in the market for another big name sooner rather than later. Brad was at it again as he traded for Grizzlies forward Juancho Hernangomez. In exchange, the Celtics traded away guards Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards and a 2026 draft pick swap.

So what does this mean for the Celtics? Here’s a few thoughts.

The Logjam at Guard Becomes Easier to Manage

It was very clear the Celtics had a surplus of guards on their roster. So it’s very clear this trade was to free some of those guards up while obtaining another forward. Carsen Edwards was never going to be a huge impact guy for the Celtics. He had one (preseason) game against Cleveland where he went off for 28. Otherwise, he’s essentially been a nonreactor. Kris Dunn is a defensive guard that probably was going to be a 9th man at best on this Celtics roster. So now you can roll into the season with Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Dennis Schroder, Payton Pritchard, Josh Richardson and Romeo Langford. That’s enough to have good starters and a much deeper bench than in years past.

So Who is Juancho Hernangomez?

Juancho Hernangomez joins the Celtics as a 6’9 forward from Spain. He was the 15th overall pick in the 2016 draft by the Denver Nuggets and spent his first three and a half seasons with the organization. He would spend his next year and a half with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was then traded a week and a half ago to the Grizzlies in a trade for Patrick Beverley. So safe to say, Hernangomez is a guy that could be on the move again.

In Conclusion

Do I see Juancho Hernangomez having any impact on the Celtics? No, I don’t. I think it’s another move by Brad to trim the roster and get affordable contracts on the books. He’s cooking something in the lab and Hernangomez won’t be a main ingredient. But for now, maybe he’ll surprise us and be a nice piece off the bench. The possibilities are endless.
