Boston Red Sox: Chris Sale is dialing up “F-U” fastballs again

Chris Sale looked pissed on the mound against the Twins on Thursday night. There was his immaculate third inning he threw and he finished the game with eight punch outs. Sale featured unhittable sliders and “FU” fastballs that made the Twins look foolish at the plate.

“Tonight, as a whole, was the best I’ve felt coming into a start, coming out of a start and during the start,” Sale said. “I felt strong throughout.”

The tall lefty went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in Boston’s 12–2 win.

Dial up some Chris Sale “FU”fastballs

Despite the impressive immaculate inning, Sale was also able to dial up his velocity to 98 mph at times during the game.

Sale would allow a two-run home run to Willians Astudillo that would end up in the Green Monster. Following that homer, Sale pitched pissed off and fired three straight fastballs at 98 mph or harder. This was the first time since his Tommy John surgery that Sale has been able to dial up his fastball.

“That’s probably the most pissed I’ve been on a baseball field in a while,” Sale said. “That’s just coming out of anger and frustration. I like to call those FU fastballs, I can’t really say the word. But I got pissed, I got going, and today was probably the best my mechanics have been start to finish.”

Sale has been a huge boost to the rotation

Since his return to the rotation, Sale is now 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. He has been getting better after every start which is exactly what the rotation needs heading into October.

“He was good and he showed us that he has something in the tank,” said manager Alex Cora. “You hate to see the homer, but then after that, you saw the (velocity) numbers going up. That’s a good sign. He was in control.”

Sale will get the ball next week in Tampa in a crucial series against the first place Rays. He will look to build on each of his last three starts and help the Sox stay in the playoff hunt.

This was the first immaculate inning throw at Fenway Park since Pedro Martinez threw one back in 2002 against the Mariners.
