Boston Red Sox: Kyle Schwarber crushes his eighth leadoff homerun this season

Kyle Schwarber may not look like your prototypical leadoff hitter, but his numbers certainly tell a different story. The new Sox leadoff hitter crushed his fourth home run since joining the team. His solo home run was also his 29th of the season.

Schwarber launched a Cal Quantrill breaking ball deep into centerfield seats. His home run came in the first inning and gave the Sox a quick 1-0 lead.

The left-handed Schwarber has hit leadoff in 25 games this season, he has eight home runs from the top of the lineup. That statistic leads all of Major League Baseball for leadoff hitters.

Coming into tonight, Schwarber was slashing .339/.473/.559 with the Red Sox. The 28-year-old left-handed hitter has been producing offensively since joining the Red Sox in his trade from the Nationals.

It is expected that Schwarber will decline his 2022 option and test free agency in the winter. Schwarber signed with the Nationals last winter for one-year, $10.5 million. That deal also included the $11.5 million mutual option. Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom should prioritize making a run to keep Schwarber in Boston beyond this season.
