Celtics trade away Tristan Thompson, receive Kris Dunn in three-team deal

I know it’s the MLB trade deadline today. But let’s face it, the Red Sox deadline was just a smidge underwhelming. So now we turn our attention to the Boston Celtics. The Celtics so far under Brad Stevens have not been afraid to make moves. Just a month ago, the Celtics traded away Kemba Walker. Now? They’re trading away Tristan Thompson. In return, the Celtics are receiving former Providence Friars guard Kris Dunn.

The move comes a day after the completed NBA draft. The Celtics also received Bruno Fernando in the deal as well.

Kris Dunn Background

Let’s take a look at the background of new Celtics guard Kris Dunn, shall we? Dunn is a New England kid from New London, Connecticut. He was a former Providence Friar until he was taken 5th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2016 NBA draft. Dunn then went on to play for the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks. He only played four games with the Hawks last season as he had leg injuries that cost him most of his season. Kind of cool to see a New England kid playing for the Boston Celtics now!

Bye-Bye Tristan Thompson!

Honestly, I’m perfectly fine with Tristan Thompson leaving after one season. It’s not like he exactly lit it up every night for the Celtics. Plus, he was in and out of the lineup with all the COVID stuff last season. It seemed like it was the right thing to do to let Thompson out the door and go young at the big man position. You have Robert Williams and Moses Brown, and veteran Al Horford who comes back to Boston after the Kemba trade. Plus, this creates a new nine million dollar trade package exception. So the Celtics could get somebody else in the very near future, with free agency starting on Monday night.

In Conclusion

Brad Stevens is really showing us all he doesn’t mind making a deal. This is a great sign! After all the years of Danny Ainge hoarding assets and not pulling the trigger on trades, Brad is doing it in front of our very eyes. So what’s next? That remains to be seen with free agency beginning Monday. Tristan Thompson is out. Kris Dunn is in. Dunn is a good defender who has upside offensively. All in all, another good move by Brad Stevens!
