Thoughts on the Buffalo Bills 53 Man Roster

Yesterday, the Buffalo Bills finalized their 53 man roster for the regular season. As always, you’re going to have players who are automatics and players who surprisingly got cut. In this article, I’m going to break down each position on the roster and give my reaction to it.

Quarterbacks:

Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky

Q&A: Mitchell Trubisky goes in depth on why he decided to sign with the Bills | Buffalo Bills News | NFL | buffalonews.com

We all knew Josh Allen was going to be the starting quarterback, but we didn’t know who his backup was going to be. We all found out yesterday as Mitch Trubisky made the roster, while Davis Webb and Jake Fromm did not. Trubisky signing with the Bills was a huge surprise to me but he played really well in the preseason and I think he will be a reliable backup for Buffalo. Both Fromm and Webb will be on the practice squad.

Running Backs:
Zack Moss, Matt Breida, Devin Singletary, Taiwan Jones and Reggie Gilliam (Fullback)

After not having a dangerous backfield last season, I think Buffalo’s running backs will bounce back this season. Devin Singletary is going to have a breakout season and Zack Moss will have a productive sophomore season. The Bills brought in Matt Breida from Miami to help out and they have Reggie Gilliam as the fullback.

Wide Receivers:

Emmanuel Sanders, Marquez Stevenson, Cole Beasley, Gabriel Davis, Stefon Diggs, Jake Kumerow and Isaiah McKenzie

Up next, one of the best wide receiving corps in the NFL. Obviously, Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley are the headliners on the depth chart. Buffalo brought in Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, while Gabriel Davis is going to be a star. Jake Kumerow is a fan favorite and his performance in the preseason really stood out. Rookie Marquez Stevenson will start the year on IR and Isaiah McKenzie will serve as the punt and kick returner but will be used in the offense as well.

Tight Ends:

Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney

This is where I’m surprised. The Bills tight ends include Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney. I expected Knox to make the roster but not Sweeney. During free agency, Buffalo signed Jacob Hollister to help out Knox and I would’ve thought Hollister would make the team instead of Sweeney. General manager Brandon Beane said it was a numbers thing for Hollister. They wanted to have more defensive line players and didn’t rule out bringing him back but he expects Hollister to sign with another team.

Offensive Line:

Mitch Morse (Center), Ike Boettger (Guard), Ryan Bates (Offensive Tackle), Tommy Doyle (Offensive Tackle), Daryl Williams (Offensive Tackle), Dion Dawkins (Offensive Tackle), Cody Ford (Offensive Tackle), Spencer Brown (Offensive Tackle), and Jon Feliciano (Guard)

Buffalo pretty much brought back their entire offensive line from last season. The names include Mitch Morse, Ike Boettger, Ryan Bates, Daryl Williams, Dion Dawkins, Cody Ford and Jon Feliciano. Tommy Doyle and Spencer Brown were both drafted but as I mentioned earlier, the band from last year is back together for the most part.

Defensive Line:

Greg Rousseau, Jerry Hughes, A.J. Epenesa, Justin Zimmer, Ed Oliver, Boogie Basham, Efe Obada, Vernon Butler, Mario Addison, Star Lotulelei and Harrison Phillips

In my opinion, the Bills defensive line was the main focus of the offseason. Buffalo kept Jerry Hughes, A.J. Epenesa, Ed Oliver, Justin Zimmer, Mario Addison, Vernon Butler and Harrison Phillips. In free agency, they signed Efe Obada. Star Lotulelei opted out last season but he will be back. Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham were drafted and I expect both of them to have an immediate impact on the team.

Linebackers:

Tyler Matakevich, Tremaine Edmunds, A.J. Klein, Andre Smith, Tyrel Dodson and Matt Milano

For the linebackers, Tyrel Dodson and Andre Smith are mainly used on the special teams unit but made the roster. A.J. Klein is back on the team as well. Tremaine Edmunds is someone who will breakout this season. Lastly, Matt Milano is back on the team after resigning with Buffalo in the offseason.

Cornerbacks:

Taron Johnson, Tre’Davious White, Dane Jackson, Siran Neal and Levi Wallace

Buffalo’s secondary is back together. Starting off with the cornerbacks, Buffalo brought back their corners from the season before. Taron Johnson, Tre’Davious White, Dane Jackson, Siran Neal and Levi Wallace are back. I love how everyone is back because they are familiar with each other and the system.

Safeties

Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, Damar Hamlin and Jaquan Johnson

Jaquan Johnson, Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde are back as well for the Bills safety unit. Damar Hamlin got drafted by the team and will be part of the 53 man roster.

Special Teams

Tyler Bass (Kicker), Matt Haack (Punter) and Reid Ferguson (Long Snapper)

Why consistency is key for the Bills 2021 special teams unit

To conclude the 53 man roster, Tyler Bass who had a good rookie season will be kicking for the Bills. Matt Haack, who signed with the team in free agency will be punting and Reid Ferguson will be the long snapper. Reid got released because of a roster move but will take Marquez Stevenson’s spot because of Stevenson’s injury.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, there is your 53 man roster for the Buffalo Bills. Hollister being released was the biggest surprise for me but Brandon Beane is in charge. I am very excited to see what this team does and so should every member of Bills Mafia.
