The Dodgers Win The 2020 World Series! World Series Recap

If you did not see last night, Tuesday 10/27/20, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2020 World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays 4 games to 2. A lot of people were not excited for this matchup, but it was a very entertaining series. This is the first World Series for the Dodgers in 32 years. Now the Rays are 0-2 when they have made the World Series (lost 2008 to Phillies). I will recap each game and gave my thoughts on the series.

World Series Recap

Game 1

Dodgers 8 Rays 3

This one was all Dodgers. They got the scoring started in the bottom of the 4th with a 2 run homer off of the bat of Cody Bellinger. The major storyline after this game was Kevin Cash, the Rays manager, leaving in Tyler Glasnow to throw over 110 pitches. In the 5th Mookie Betts starts the inning with a walk then stole 2nd. Corey Seager walked as well, Justin Turner struck out. Max Muncy hit a roundball that scored Betts. Will Smith singles to score Seager. That is when the Rays took out Glasnow.

I believe that was too long to keep Glasnow in. He had 6 walks to go along with 8 strikeouts. Those pitches add up. Glasnow was wild all night. If the Rays wanted to win that game they should have went to the bullpen once he walked Betts.

The two stars of the night for the Dodgers were Mookie Betts and Clayton Kershaw. Betts went 2-4 with a homerun and 2 stolen bases. Kershaw pitched 6 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 8. Kershaw has been known to not pitch well in the World Series. This put most of that to bed.

After this game many people were think it would be a Dodgers sweep or Dodgers winning in 5 games. That is not what happen.

Game 2

Rays 6 Dodgers 4

The Rays were able to tie the series up after a game 2 win. Brandon Lowe lead the way with 2 homeruns. Lowe hit one in the top of the 1st to put the Rays up 1-0. The Rays were able to jump up 3-0 when Joey Wendle doubled home Ji-Man Choi and Manuel Margot. In the top of the 5th Lowe hit his second homer to put the Rays up 5-0. The Dodgers were able to scratch across a few runs late with homeruns by Chris Taylor, Will Smith, and Corey Seager. But that was not enough.

Blake Snell looked great on the mound for the Rays. He went 4 2/3 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 runs while getting 9 strikeouts. Snell looked like he could go longer in the game, but the Rays wanted to go to their bullpen. The bullpen pitched great going 4 1/3 innings only allowing 2 more runs.

This was the win the Rays needed to put some confidence in themselves. They are the underdog in the series and need to give the Dodgers everything they had to win the series. But, game 3 did not go the way the Rays wanted it to go.

Game 3

Dodgers 6 Rays 2

The Dodgers had this game the whole way through. They got up 1-0 in the top of the first with a Justin Turner solo homer. They would not give the lead back at any point. Max Muncy would add a 2 RBI single in the 3rd. Austin Burnets did something not many players do, he bunted home a run in the 4th then hit a homerun in the 6th. We do not see many players have the ability to both bunt and hit a ball out of the ball park.

This game showed the Walker Buehler is the future ace of the Dodgers. He went 6 innings of 1 run ball. Buehler also struck out 10 Rays hitters. That is what the Dodgers are looking for as Kershaw gets older. Charlie Morton of the Rays did not have his best stuff. Only going 4 1/3 allowing 5 runs.

The Rays would need a bounce back after this loss. This one felt like it counted for 2. Many people again felt the Dodgers would win this one in 5 games. The Rays looked defeated. But the Rays got what they needed in game 4.

Game 4

Rays 8 Dodgers 7

This is one of the craziest World Series games ever. It had back and forth action all game. The Dodgers went up 2-0 then 4-2 after Kike Hernandez RBI double. The Rays would take a 5-4 lead when Brandon Lowe hit a 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 6th. The Dodgers took the lead right back when Joe Pederson singled to score Corey Seager and Justin Turner. The Rays would tie it back at 6 with a Kevin Kiermaier homerun in the 7th. Seager singled home Christ Taylor to break the tie and give the Dodgers a 7-6 lead.

Then all the fun happened in the bottom of the 9th. Kiermaier singled with 1 out then Randy Arozarena walked after a line-out. Brett Phillips, who came in as a pinch runner singles up the middle. Kiermaier scores easily and Arozarena tries to score from first. He falls over, but Will Smith drops the throw in at home allowing Arozarena to get up and score. This was a wild finish.

That win was exactly what the Rays needed. It gave them all the momentum going forward. Now the series was tied at 2 game a piece. All the Rays needed to do was win 2 of the last 3 games. Could they do it, or would the Dodgers be able to show why they were the best team in all of baseball?

Game 5

Dodgers 4 Rays 2

This game was a pitching rematch of game 1, Clayton Kershaw vs Tyler Glasnow. This one went similarly to how game 1 went. The Dodgers got up quick with RBI singles by Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger in the 1st. Joe Pederson would make it 3-0 with a solo homer. The Rays would make it 3-2 with triple by Yandy Diaz and a single by Randy Arozarena. Max Muncy put the finding touches on it with a solo homerun in the 5th.

Kershaw out dueled Glasnow again. Glasnow looked a little sharper this time out. But he got bit by the long ball and walks again. While Kershaw was able to only allow 2 runs in 5 2/3 innings. This made Kershaw 2-0 in the World Series proving to people that he could pitch in the playoffs.

Now that the Dodgers were 1 win a way from clinching the World Series, could the Rays stay alive in game 6? The Rays would turn to their ace in Blake Snell to try to force a game 7. Would that be enough?

Game 6

Dodgers 3 Rays 1

There you have it! The Dodgers would win the World Series with a game 6 3-1 win. This game was very exciting. Randy Arozarena got the scoring started with solo homerun in the top of the first. That would end up being the only run the Rays would get. They had their chances. In the second Arozarena came up with 2 outs and guys on 1st and 2nd. He would go down swinging for strike 3.

Here comes what everyone is talking about after the game. Blake Snell was dominating the Dodgers hitters. With 1 out in the bottom of the 6th Austin Barnes singles, only the 2nd hit for the Dodgers. The next 3 hitters for the Dodgers (Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, and Justin Turner) were a combined 0-6 with 6 strikeouts. Kevin Cash come out and takes Blake Snell out of the game for reliever Nick Anderson. Betts doubles, Barnes scores on a wild pitch, then betts scores on a grounder to 1st. That gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

I will get to my thoughts about that decision in a minute. But Betts would a 1 more run with a solo homerun in the 8th. The Rays would not have many chances after that.

How the Dodgers Won the 2020 World Series Title - The New York Times

Well I loved this World Series. I felt both teams were pretty evenly matched. You could tell the Dodgers were the better team. But, the Rays were not going to make it easy on them. Every game was entertaining in its own way. There were a lot of homeruns and strikeouts. Some pitchers looked good and some looked bad.

Corey Seager won World Series MVP going 8-20 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs. He became only the 8th player to win a League Championship Series and World Series MVPs. I know that voting has to be on only the World Series and not other things. But, I would have given it to Clayton Kershaw for everything he was gone through. Also, he went 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in the 2020 World Series.

Game 6 Decision

Okay so this is what everyone is talking about. Kevin Cash taking out Blake Snell in the 6th inning of game 6. I hated this decision.

As you can tell from those tweets I was not happy with what happened. I coach baseball (yes I coach 10 year olds and not Major League Baseball), but I still have to make decisions on what to do with pitchers. I do not care what analytics tell you, Blake Snell needs to stay in the game. At the Major League level there should be a mix of both feel and analytics. The Rays rely on computers way too much. If I was Snell I would want out of Tampa because of that. Hopefully Snell can win a ring at some point in his career. I am not saying the Rays win that game but they had a better chance of winning it with Snell on the mound.
