On Monday prior to the start of the series against the Rays, the Red Sox acquired Brad Peacock. The Sox landed the veteran from the Indians for cash considerations. Peacock was eligible to be dealt after the trade deadline because he was not on the Indians 40-man roster. The team announced that Peacock will start the on Tuesday on three days rest, with the hopes the veteran can throw three to four innings.
“He competes,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “When he’s healthy, when he’s right, that ball moves all over the place. He has a pretty good idea of what to do on the mound.”
The Red Sox are dealing with a major issue within the clubhouse. The club has announced that nine players and coaches have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been a close contact.
The veteran flew down to Tampa Bay and met the team on Monday. The 33-year-old struggled for the Indians Triple-A affiliate this season. Peacock is 0-4 with a 7.68 ERA over 34 innings, while 29 earned runs over 11 games.
Brad Peacock provides much needed depth
With the trade, the Red Sox add depth to the their roster for the remainder of the season. Peacock has pitched as swingman for the majority of his career.
The righty was drafted by the Nationals and spent his first season of his career in Washington. Following that first year, Peacock pitched for the Houston Astros from 2013-20, posting a 4.08 ERA. He saw his greatest success from 2016-2018 posting a 16-8 record, 3.23 ERA, 1.17 WHIP.
Peacock signed with the Indians organization following his run with Houston. He has right shoulder surgery last season after feeling discomfort.
The Red Sox expressed interest in adding Peacock during the offseason. “This is a guy we actually talk in the offseason. We were interested,” Cora said. “It just didn’t happen. It took him a while to get to where he wanted to feel health-wise. He’s healthy. He feels he’s been bouncing back great, especially the last two. So he’ll go out there and compete.”
Peacock’s journey now leads him to Boston where he will look to help the ailing Red Sox. Boston dropped the series opener against the Rays 6-1. The club is now nine games back of the first place Rays and two games up on the Athletics for the fifth playoff spot.
