Mark Kotsay As The Red Sox Next Manager?
Since the Boston Red Sox canned former manager Alex Cora, the news surrounding their managerial search has been relatively quiet. But last night, Masslive.com writer Chris Cotillo gave us a name to look at: Mark Kotsay.
Red Sox are believed to have interest in Mark Kotsay for their next manager. Unclear if he’s interviewed yet.
Kotsay, now an A’s coach, played for Sox in 08-09. He was interviewed by Houston recently.

Kotsay, a 17-year big leaguer, who spent most of his career bouncing around between organizations, had a short stint in Boston that lasted only 49 games between 2008 and 2009. But after ending his career in 2013 with the San Diego Padres, Kotsay began his coaching career.
In 2015, Kotsay was named Padres bench coach- where he stayed for one season- before moving to Oakland to become the A’s bench coach. That is part of the reason why Kotsay has been a much sought after interviewee for teams this offseason. Earlier this winter, Kotsay received interest from the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and (most recently) the Houston Astros, who decided to hire Dusty Baker today.
When I think of Kotsay becoming Boston’s next manager, I love the idea. It isn’t a “sexy” name like Dusty Baker or Buck Showalter, but Kotsay could bring a similar vibe to the Sox clubhouse that Cora did when he took over for John Farrell before the 2018 season.
Obviously I am not saying that Kotsay is Alex Cora, but Kotsay has been either playing or coaching in major league baseball for pretty much the last 20+ years. The recency in which he has both coach and played should be a tremendous help if he is offered the Sox gig.
Even though sign-stealing may / probably helped, part of the reason why Cora had such great success in Boston was because he knew how this generation of players thought, worked, and played. That is why I think it is possible that Kotsay brings a similar type of coaching style to Cora, something Sox players would love to see once again.
