Daniel Jones Getting One More Chance under Joe Schoen?
After hiring Joe Schoen as their next general manager, the Giants now have their leader on the field in Brian Daboll. It was Daboll’s job to lose once Schoen took the job. Now that they have their two leaders, it is time to get to work. One of the biggest questions Schoen and Daboll will have to answer is about the Giant’s direction at quarterback. Will the new regime give Daniel Jones another chance to prove that he can be a franchise quarterback?
No Chance to Succeed
Since Daniel Jones took over as the Giants starting quarterback, he has had now 3 different head coaches and what seems like countless offensive coordinators. To be frank, the Giants have done nothing to help Daniel Jones succeed. They finally tried to put weapons around him for this past season when they signed Kenny Golladay and drafted Kadarius Toney. Both players drastically underperformed for various reasons.
I was one of the people writing at the start of the season that if Jones could not succeed with the weapons he had this season then it would be time to move on. However, Golladay and Toney were often hurt and most importantly, the Giants offensive line was a sieve. Jones was not given the time he needed to make the plays he’s capable of.
Invest in the Offensive Line
As I mentioned above, the Giants offensive line has been a nightmare. Apart from Andrew Thomas, there are no long-term answers on the current roster. Therefore, Joe Schoen needs to invest in the offensive line with smart free agent contracts (not like Nate Solder) and using their two top 7 picks wisely. I touched on a few names in my piece a few weeks ago that we will go more in depth on as the draft gets closer. But the Giants will definitely be targeting players like Tyler Lindbaum, Ikem Ekwonu, and Charles Cross. It would not surprise me if they took 2 of those 3 if they were all available. They would immediately join Thomas as impact starters on the offensive line.
Jones has Shown Flashes
Daniel Jones has shown the type of quarterback he can be. He threw for 24 touchdowns as a rookie but has not matched that number in the last two seasons combined. The Giants offense has been broken. Joe Judge and Jason Garrett turned the Giants offense into an unwatchable display.
Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll have obviously been working with Josh Allen the past few seasons. They managed to turn Allen into one of the games top players after years of inaccuracy in college. I am not saying that they will turn Daniel Jones into Josh Allen, but I am saying that Jones has some redeeming qualities that the new regime can use to their advantage. Jones is very mobile like Allen, has a good arm, and throws an excellent deep ball. Jones was at his best when he was allowed to sling the football instead of the conservative nature of Garrett and Judge.
Final Thoughts
It is nearly impossible to win in the NFL without a true franchise quarterback. The Giants were hoping Jones could be that guy when they took him sixth overall. So far, Jones has underwhelmed, however, as owner John Mara said, “We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up….” As of now Daniel Jones has been given the vote of confidence from his new head coach, new GM, and his owner. It seems like he will be given at least one more season to prove to the organization he can be their next franchise quarterback.
