Boston Red Sox defeat the Rays and advance to the ALCS

The Boston Red Sox were a last place team in 2020 finishing with a 24-36 record. The Red Sox are now four wins away from advancing to the World Series. Boston defeated the Rays at Fenway Park on Monday night 6-5 clinching a spot in the ALCS.

Manager Alex Cora gave the ball to left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to start Game 4. Rodriguez struggled in his last start in Game 1 lasting only 1 ⅔ innings. On Monday night, Rodriguez was nails for his ball club and pitched five innings giving up three hits, two earned runs, zero walks and struck out six hitters.

Rodriguez’s impressive Game 4 performance coupled by five run third inning will allow Boston to advance in October.

The Red Sox smack around the Rays in the third inning

The Red Sox put a five spot on the board in the third inning after smacking around Rays Shane McClanahan. The Game 1 starter who was lights out was definitely the opposite on Monday night. McClanahan retired two batters and surrendered a three-run home run to Rafael Devers. The Sox third baseman crushed McClanhan’s pitch deep to center to break the game out early.

In typically Rays fashion they clawed their way back into the game ultimately tying it in the eighth inning off Ryan Brasier. Garrett Whitlock would get his team out of the jam in the eighth and the Red Sox would provide heroics just one inning later.

Sunday night’s hero Christian Vazquez led the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to left field. Christian Arroyo came up after Vazquez and laid down a text book bunt to move the catcher over to second. After Travis Shaw pinch hit for Bobby Dalbec, he reached on an infield single which moved Vazquez to third.

Kiké Hernández is the hero on Monday night

The hottest hitter in the Red Sox lineup, Kiké Hernández continued to add his name into Red Sox postseason lore and provided the walk-off sacrifice fly to send Boston to the ALCS.

Hernández hit .450 with two home runs and six RBIs in the series.

Following the game, Hernández told the media, “We are surprising everybody but ourselves.”

The Red Sox will begin the ALCS on Friday night and will await the winner of the Astros and White Sox series.
