Patriots: Mac Jones leads first game-winning drive

Mac Jones led the New England Patriots to their second victory of the season in Week five against the Texans. In the fourth quarter, Jones completed his first game-winning drive of his career, propelling the Patriots to a 25-22 victory.

It was a slow start for New England. The defense allowed an opening 18 play drive that lasted more than 10 minutes. It ended with a 75 yard march to the end zone with a missed PAT.

Despite the defense not playing well to start, Jones kept his composure throughout the entire game. It never felt like the Patriots were out of the game and that’s because of Jones being under center. He’s confident and believes in the team enough to get through anything.

Jones Impresses Bill Belichick Through Five Weeks

Jones finished the game completing 23/30 passes for 231 yards and one touchdown. He did throw an interception to open the second half, however, he didn’t let it bother him too long. In fact, this was the first game we saw Jones have fun on the field with his teammates.

New England’s rookie quarterback entered Week Five with the seventh-best completion percentage in the NFL around 70 percent. He started the game by completing his first seven passes for 85 yards through two drives. Jones also completed eight of his 10 third down pass attempts.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick praised his rookie quarterback after the game.

“Mac gave it to us all day. He moved the ball. I thought he made a lot of good decisions. There were some checks that he had to make that he made throughout the day. Mac’s been good for us all year in terms of his leadership, his resilience, and kind of counting on him to do the right thing. He really does it at a high level, so it’s been impressive.” – Bill Belichick, per Hayden Bird of Boston.com

Jones is on pace with some of the top rookie quarterbacks in NFL history

Jones currently has 135 completions through five weeks this season. He tied the NFL record for most completions by a rookie in his first five starts. To set the rookie record, Jones will have to complete 397 total passes this season.

It’s fair to say with every week that goes by, Jones is more prepared and confident in himself. In return, it translates onto the field for the Pats. We’ll see how Jones can keep up with Dak Prescott and the Cowboys this week.
