Winners & Losers From EPL’s Matchday 21

Matchday 21 is officially in the books. We had a good slate of games that took place on Saturday and Sunday. Each of the 20 teams played this weekend. Looking at what happened in those games I will be giving you who my winners of the matchday was and who my losers were.

Chelsea

Chelsea played their first game with new manager Thomas Tuchel and boy did they look good in his first game. Tuchel put together a new formation and Chelsea looked lethal. I understand that they were playing against Burnley, but Burnley is known for playing teams tough. The 3-4-2-1 formation that Chelsea was running is going to be a formation that we will see a lot more from Chelsea.

Having three in the back to go along with four in the midfield was a fantastic set up for this team. Then having a three man attack force of Mason Mount, Timo Werner, and Tammy Abraham played very well together this past weekend. With Tuchel being able to use a front three with a combination of Mount, Werner, Pulisic, Havertz, Abraham, or Giroud is going to be deadly.

Chelsea is my main winner from Matchday 21.

West Ham United

West Ham had a big game against Liverpool and they did not look good in the second half against Liverpool. The Hammers did not capitalize on their chance to jump back into the number four spot if they were to beat Liverpool. David Moyes’ team played Liverpool fairly well in the first half. Then the second half a completely different West Ham team came out of the locker room and did not play well.

The first goal was an absolute strike by Salah so there was nothing they could do about that. Goal number two was started off of a West Ham corner kick. Alexander-Arnold’s clear to Shaqiri which lead to Shaqiri’s cross to Salah changed the entire complexion of the game when that second goal was scored.

West Ham now sits four points back of fourth place and they are my biggest losers from Matchday 21.

Other Winners From Matchday 21:

Aston Villa: Ross Barkley’s strike helped Villa Secure the 1-0 win over Southampton. Villa is now in ninth place after their huge victory. With the schedule that Aston Villa has coming up they needed this win more than ever in order to still be in contention for top six in the table.

Manchester City: With their win and Manchester United drawing with Arsenal, Manchester City is a winner this weekend. They beat Sheffield United, but now they have a three point lead over United with a game advantage on them as well.

Other Losers From Matchday 21:

Everton: Everton getting a loss to Newcastle was not ideal for them. They have a tough little stretch coming up so that was a must win for them. Having to take on Leeds, Manchester United, Fulham, Liverpool, and Southampton in their next five games isn’t great. If they want to contend for a Europa League spot, they are going to have to win at least three out of their next five in my opinion.

Tottenham: Another team that couldn’t capitalize this weekend was Tottenham. This team is starting to get back to the same ways that Tottenham looked last season. Inconsistencies are going to be a killer for this team. Without the contribution from Son and Kane, this team is going to struggle the rest of the year. Mourinho is going to need to get this team back into form so that they can be playing in some Champions League action next year. If they don’t Harry Kane might be looking for another club to go play for.
