Why the 2020 Seattle Seahawks Defense Could Go Down In History

Currently, the Seattle Seahawks sit atop the NFC west with a 6-2 record. Their quarterback, Russell Wilson, has helped carry them to win after win. Wilson is currently the NFL’s MVP favorite, after already throwing for 28 touchdowns despite only playing in 8 games.

Wilson, along with the performances of wide receivers D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, have helped the Seahawks offense roll. The team currently holds the NFL lead for touchdowns with 36. The team has finally let “Russ cook” and it is paying dividends.

But unfortunately for Seattle, football is not a one sided sport. Their offense is one of the tops in the league, but their defense has been historically bad this season. So bad to the point that is on track to break records by some serious margins.

Yes, they have been THAT bad. And despite still having all-pro linebacker Bobby Wagner, and trading for safety Jamal Adams this past offseason, the rest of the defense has struggled immensely.

Adams himself hasn’t necessarily been great either when he has been on the field. The safety has missed four games this year and, according to Pro Football Focus, he has an overall grade of 60.8. That marks him as the 46th graded safety in the NFL. And no, I am not saying that all of the defensive of struggles of Seattle are on him. I mean, Adams’ performance could be a product of his surroundings. But at the same time, he needs to play better: just like the rest of the D.

Seattle did boost their defensive front with a trade for disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap, but that can only do so much. He himself won’t be able to change that Seattle is giving up nearly 40 more yards a game than any other team. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, it will be hard for Seattle to get there with a defense like this.

Don’t get me wrong, Russell Wilson is great and could definitely carry the Hawks. But in the same breath, that task is so much harder for him and the offense when the defense is on this historically bad pace.
