Today, the NCAA College Football Playoff Committee met to discuss the future of the 4-team playoff format. The format was introduced in 2014 where we saw Ohio State capture the first championship. Since then, we have seen Alabama win three times, Clemson twice, and LSU and Ohio State once.
Update: 2020 season’s bracket with top 4 conference champs getting byes.

But the big thing gaining traction was the committees discussion of a 12 team playoff. The tweet above was what the 2020 top 12 would have looked like in a playoff format. It looks like the Big 4 conferences get the byes and then the rest is filled in with at large teams.
In my opinion, expanding the playoff is a waste of time. No matter if it is 8 teams, 16, 32, 64 or 128 teams we are getting the same four or five teams in the semi-finals every time. College football is not college basketball and that is okay to admit. We just don’t see major upsets. The teams that are big named and can recruit win, and everyone else just kind of falls short. Nothing against say, Indiana, but they aren’t on the same level as Alabama or any of those top seven teams in that graphic. Coastal Carolina is never beating Notre Dame, and Notre Dame is never beating Alabama. So what is the point of an expansion?
You will inevitably get the same four or five teams like we do every year in the Playoff. No matter how you move the pieces around, you are going to get Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State in the Final Four! Cincinnati is never beating Alabama. Indiana nor Texas A&M are never beating Ohio State. Even when Indiana was great last year they still couldn’t win. This all comes down to recruiting and money. These power houses bring in the money and can recruit like they bring in the big bucks.
I understand why people want a 12 team playoff so they can give teams like Coastal Carolina and Indiana a chance to a championship, but in actuality it is never going to happen. In my opinion, I think it is obvious for the Playoff to go back to two or three teams. I see why people want this but in actuality we will just get the same teams we always do. It’s sad, but it’s true.
