Kumar Rocker vs. Jack Leiter

With the MLB Draft just over a month away, July 11th, more and more mock drafts are starting to trickle out. With those mock drafts, the two premier pitchers in the draft are switching spots within the top 3 overall picks. Kumar Rocker vs. Jack Leiter. One mock draft has Leiter falling to the Red Sox at 4th overall; the next will have Rocker falling to 4th overall. This raises the question, though, who would you rather?

Kumar Rocker

Rocker has been just as good as advertised. He’s posting a 2.45 ERA with a K/9 percent of 13.2 striking out 129 batters in 88 innings of work while also only walking 27. In other words, he is absolutely filthy. Opponents are averaging less than one home run against him, which just further shows, he is unhittable, and even when they do get lucky and hit him, it stays in the park. Rocker got the nation’s attention when he struck-out 19 batters on his way to a no-hitter against Duke in the Super Regionals back in 2019. Oh, by the way, at that time, he was only a freshman. Talk about rising to the occasion! He has been perceived as the forgone number 1 overall pick, rightfully so. But his Vanderbilt teammate might have something to say about that.

Jack Leiter

Jack Leiter, son of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter, has been step for step with Rocker. The 21-year-old right-hander has posted a 2.12 ERA with 127 strikeouts, 34 walks, a K/9 of 15, over 76 innings pitched so far this year. Most notably, he threw a no-hitter against South Carolina earlier this season. He carried that no hitter into his next start where picked up exactly where he left off throwing 7 no hit innings. Leiter is electric. He sits between 90-95 with his fastball. But it plays like a lights out pitch because of the late movement it has on it. He will be front an center as the College baseball playoffs roll on and the College World Series gets closer and closer.

The Verdict Between Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter?

Kumar Rocker vs. Jack Leiter, both guys are lights out. Both are going to be top picks and will be top Major League pitchers in the coming years. So now begs the question, who would you rather? For me, Jack Lieter. Now this is in no way shape or form a knock to rocker because my reasoning is nothing either of them have control over. It comes down to one simple thing. Family. I am going with Lieter simply because his dad was a former MLB pitcher and a very good host on MLB Network. Again both guys will be legit. But having your dad having gone through the grind on the MLB season and the ups an downs that comes with it, can’t beat that. That is why I give the slight edge to Lieter. At the end of the day, you cant go wrong with either of these two future studs. The Red Sox and their fanbase will be beyond fortunate if one of these guys falls to them at number 4.
