If you haven’t heard it already, let me catch you up on what happened in October of 2018. Are you sitting down right now? Good. I don’t know how to tell you this, so I’m going to just come out and say it. *Deep inhale and exhale*
That’s right, you’re not dreaming! The Boston Red Sox won the 2018 World Series in very convincing fashion. But now the dust has settled and as you all know, Christmas is vastly approaching. All MLB teams have their wish lists that they want to come true. But for right now, let’s focus on what the Boston Red Sox Christmas list should look like:
- Re-sign Craig Kimbrel
I don’t care what anybody says or how many heart attacks this guy gave Red Sox fans in the postseason. Bring back Craig Kimbrel! Kimbrel has been in Boston for three seasons now and has been an All-Star in all three of them. He had 31 saves in 2016, 35 in 2017, and 42 in 2018. Sure, his control issues are alarming at times. But in reality, who else could you sign that would be just as good as Kimbrel? Adam Ottavino? Maybe. David Robertson? Doubt it! Plus, there are rumors that Kimbrel’s agent is lowering the asking price, which could be big for the Red Sox to bring him back. The Red Sox would be ludicrous to let Kimbrel walk if the price is right.
- Sign Adam Ottavino OR David Robertson
Now I know what some of you are thinking, “Didn’t you just say not to sign them?” Yes, as a closer. BUT, the Red Sox are now in need of a quality set-up man as Joe Kelly is back home with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carson Smith and Tyler Thornburg have both had the injury bug since their tenures in Boston began. Both of these guys are interesting names as Ottavino is entering his age 33 season and Robertson his age 34 season. Either one could fit the role as Ottavino had a 2.43 ERA with the Rockies last season and Robertson a 3.23 ERA with the Yankees. Give one of these guys a 2 year deal for about 10 million a year and there’s your 8th inning man.
- Extend Chris Sale ASAP!
Chris Sale needs to be in a Red Sox uniform for as long as possible. Now, some of you probably disagree with that considering the arm issues he has had toward the end of his two seasons thus far with the Red Sox. But when he’s healthy, Sale is arguably the best left-handed pitcher in the MLB. He was the Cy Young runner up in the American League in 2017 and finished 4th in voting in 2018, despite being injured for a good portion of the second half of the season.
Yes, a guy like Mookie Betts is important and you need to sign him long-term also. But, pitching is the name of the game. Sale is entering the last year of his deal that he signed with the White Sox and he is owed 12 million dollars this season. If I’m John Henry, I’m giving Sale a blank check and saying, “tell us what you want for the next five seasons”. Keep Sale at all costs!
- Hope Manny Machado goes to the White Sox or Phillies
Red Sox fans can’t help but celebrate how bad Machado looked on a Chris Sale slider to strikeout and end the World Series. All kidding aside, Machado is a difference maker and Red Sox fans should hope he miraculously signs with the White Sox or Phillies.
Those two teams aren’t bad options for Machado as the Phillies are right in the thick of things in 2019 in the National League East and the White Sox have a loaded farm system and money to spend this off-season. If Machado does indeed sign with the Yankees, their lineup could look a little something like this:
Judge, Machado and Stanton back to back to back!? No thank you! Keep Machado out of pinstripes and make David Price’s starts against the Yankees as manageable as possible. They cannot get much worse!
So that’s it Red Sox fans. Those are the four things that you should all be wishing for to have any legitimate chance at repeating. From everybody at CouchGuy Sports, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! If you need a little extra present, enjoy this!
