The troubled (but oh so talented) Browns WR Josh Gordon has just been traded to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 5th-round pick. Along with Gordon, the Patriots will also receive a 7th-round pick. If Gordon isn’t active for at least 10 games, New England gets their pick back.
Over the past five seasons, Gordon has only played 11 games due to suspensions. Not great, BUT, there is no doubt that his talent level is up to par with that of the elite wide receivers in the league. In 2013 (his last full season), Gordon posted one of the most impressive stat lines for a WR that these eyes have ever seen. In 14 games, he caught 87 balls for 1,646 yards and 9 touchdowns. In his lone game against the Patriots that season, he racked up 151 yards on 7 receptions and caught a touchdown, all while being primarily covered by Aqib Talib. He’s also the only receiver in NFL history to post consecutive games with 200+ receiving yards. The crazy part about all of this? He had Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell throwing him the ball that year. To have ANY individual success with those two under center is just insane to me. Just watch his highlights from that year and you’ll understand what I mean when I say that this kid is extremely talented:
I think this is a phenomenal deal for the Patriots. If you’re familiar with his history, you know that dealing for Josh Gordon certainly has its risks. But given his current salary (around 700K) and the price they paid to get him here, the potentially high-rewards out-weigh all of them. If he can turn it around and winds up here long-term, I have no problem saying that Josh Gordon could go down as one of the best receivers to ever play in New England.
