Thoughts on the Buffalo Bills Final 53 Man Roster

The General Roster

With the NFL season just a few days away, teams had to finalize their 53 man roster this past Saturday. Before their week one meeting with the New York Jets, the Buffalo Bills kept and released some players that surprised me but I’ll get to that in a bit. No one should be surprised by some of the offensive players such as quarterback Josh Allen, wide receivers Stefon Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley. On the defensive side, safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were automatics to make the roster. Cornerbacks Tre’Davious White and Josh Norman, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds are just among other names that we expected to be on the final roster. Now I will go over some players that were surprises who made the roster and didn’t make the roster.

Surprises

Trent Murphy (DE):

I’m surprised Trent Murphy made the final roster. With defensive end Shaq Lawson going to Miami in free agency this past offseason, Buffalo needed a replacement. They signed Mario Addison from Carolina and drafted A.J. Epenesa with their second round pick. With Jerry Hughes on the roster, it looked like Murphy was going to be the odd man out. In 2018, Murphy signed a 3-year, $21 million dollar deal with the Bills. Ever since signing with Buffalo, Murphy really hasn’t been that big of a factor on the defense. He does contribute but maybe he doesn’t get enough recognition because of how talented the Bills defense is. Either way, I’m sure head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will have a plan and will rotate each player.

Duke Williams (WR):

I feel like this one is 50/50 as for being a surprise. The former CFL wide receiver signed with the Bills last season to provide the receiving core with some size. However, he was going to have to fight for a spot because the team drafted two more receivers. Buffalo’s wide receiving core is deep so it was going to be hard enough for the rookies and Duke to make the team. One of the rookies was Gabe Davis and according to Bills reporters, he was really impressive. The other rookie, Isaiah Hodgins, is currently on injured reserve but must’ve been impressive as well considering he did make the final roster. It could be because Duke wasn’t impressing management but with the number of wide receivers already on the roster, I feel like it would’ve been a long shot for Duke to make the roster.

Tyler Bass (K):

The last player I will talk about is rookie kicker Tyler Bass. Veteran kicker Stephen Hauschka was surprisingly cut a couple of weeks ago, which meant that Bass won the kicking job. Last season, Hauschka wasn’t the same kicker he was when he first signed with the team but did get better later in the season. It’s just surprising to see a rookie make the team over a trusty veteran like Hauschka. However, it does make sense. Bass a has a great leg and can make a field goal from long range. Even though Hauschka was a surprise at first, I can understand why Bass made the team over Stephen.
