Quinn Nordin: The Undrafted Free Agent Catching the Eyes of the Patriots

We are at one of the most exciting points of the NFL preseason, with preseason games less than a week away it comes time for the rookies and undrafted free agents to show what they have got in real game action. For Patriots fans, this is an exciting time. In the past 17 years dating back to 2004, the Patriots have an undrafted free agent on the final roster. From David Andrews to Jonathan Jones and J.C. Jackson. The New England Patriots have had a good run of success with Undrafted Rookies. This year should be no exception with an UDFA kicker named Quinn Nordin…sounds like a Patriots player already.

The Undrafted Free Agent that has Caught Some Eyes Recently

Get to know this name ladies and gentlemen. Quinn Nordin, an undrafted kicker out of Michigan that the Patriots picked up. Nordin was 2 for 5 in field goals his Senior Year, which calculates to about 40 percent. His career college numbers add up to 42-58 on Field Goals, calculating 72 percent.

Nordin has been absolute fire this preseason. In a recent scrimmage in front of season ticket holders, Nordin went 10 for 10 while nailing a 60 yard Field Goal in the process.

This coming one year after the veteran kicker, Nick Folk had an outstanding season, while rookie kicker, Justin Rohrwasser sat on the practice squad and was later cut due to struggles kicking. It would be a very nice sight for a team that is looking for a new franchise kicker post-Stephen Gostkowski Era.

Is There Now a Competition for the Kicker Spot on the Patriots?

This is where it gets interesting. Reports have circulated that veteran kicker, Nick Folk has struggled in camp and that Quinn Nordin has been better as of late for the Patriots in camp. So, does this herald a kicking competition?

This is such an underrated competition that I never thought I would be writing about. Yet, here I am doing an article on a possible up-and-coming kicker.

Nick Folk did a fantastic job for the New England Patriots last season. He came up big so many times for that team. Knowing Coach Bill though, last year’s stats do not mean anything when it comes to the upcoming season. With only three preseason games this year, it is going to make this competition even more interesting. Expect Nordin to see a lot of playing time on Thursday, when the Patriots face the Washington Football team in their first game of the preseason, expect to be highly impressed by his performance as well.

Wrapping it Up

I fully expect this competition to be very interesting. Nick Folk’s contract can easily be cut when it comes to roster trimming. He sits with only a 1-year deal worth 1 million dollars. This makes it a true prove it deal. The pressure leans more toward the veteran in this scenario, especially after the fantastic year Folk had in 2020.

In the end, though, my prediction for this competition is a bold one. I do believe kicker, Quinn Nordin will win the job of starting kicker. Whether or not Bill chooses to carry two kickers is a question that cannot be answered. What can be answered though is that the 2021 Patriots will have a new kicker.

My bold prediction to go along with that, I think the New England Patriots have found their new franchise kicker.
