The Red Sox need to extend Xander Bogaerts NOW!
As the Boston Red Sox enter the 2022 season, there are a lot of questions that surround them. Will they be able to replicate the success they had in 2021? What will the team look like for the first month without Chris Sale? Can they compete with the likes of the Blue Jays and Rays? But the biggest question of all might be this: when will the Red Sox sign Xander Bogaerts to a long term extension? This is a legitimate concern for all members of Red Sox nation. Here are a few reasons why you should be worried about Xander Bogaerts staying long term in Boston.
The Trevor Story Signing
On March 20th, the Red Sox signed Trevor Story to a 6 year, 140 million dollar deal. This is a great signing. But of course, it raises questions of whether or not the Red Sox are serious about signing Bogaerts to a long term extension. They can let Xander walk and still have Trevor Story fill in at shortstop. It wouldn’t be the craziest logic in the world.
Xander Bogaerts is the Red Sox Leader
Xander Bogaerts is undoubtedly the heart and soul of this Red Sox team. Guys look up to him and go to him for wisdom and guidance. It wouldn’t surprise me if Bogaerts decided he wanted to finish his career as a Red Sox player. You need that leader in the clubhouse that shows it on the field. Bogaerts is 100% that guy. Keep him in the clubhouse at all costs!
The Young Kids Aren’t Ready Yet
The Red Sox have a pairing up the middle in Marcelo Mayer and Nick Yorke that aren’t ready for the big leagues just yet. Yorke is clearly on his way. Mayer was drafted just last July. The future is very bright with these two up the middle for 10 plus years. But until then, Bogaerts is the guy in the middle infield along with Trevor Story. Give the kids their time and let them continue to develop. Bogaerts is doing just fine for the Red Sox!
