Roman Josi should be the Norris Trophy favorite

The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded to the NHL’s top defenseman and once again, Roman Josi is in the running for it. Back in the 2019-2020 season, Josi won the award for that season posting 65 points in 69 games. He has been one of the best all-around defenseman in the league for many years now and he keeps getting better and better. You want to talk about value? If it wasn’t for Roman Josi, the Nashville Predators wouldn’t be in the position they are today and honestly might not been a playoff team in the past couple years including this year. When people think of the Norris potential winners this year, most tend to think about Cale Makar and Adam Fox. Both of those guys play on better team’s, which gives them a better advantage. Here are their current stats.

Adam Fox- 63 games: 64 points(10 goals, 54 assists)

Cale Makar- 62 games: 73 points(24 goals, 49 assists)

Roman Josi- 64 games: 81 points(18 goals, 63 assists)

So based off stats, Josi has both of them beat. He may have played a game or two more, but they still wouldn’t have 81 or more. Josi is on pace to have over 100 points as a defenseman and that hasn’t happen since Brian Leetch in the 1991-1992 season. Since 2000, the best statistical season recored by a defenseman was Brent Burns in 2018-2019 season recording 85 points in 83 games. At his current pace, Josi is going to break that and possibly hit the 100 point mark as well.

The race is really only between Josi and Makar at the moment, but a lot of people have Makar over Josi because is younger and does incredible things on the ice. Now Roman may not be that young, he can still do incredible things on the ice. Makar also plays for the best team in the Western Conference playing alongside guys like Nathan Mackinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, and Mikko Rantenen.

By the end of the season, Roman Josi should have his 2nd Norris Trophy. It is unfortunate that Makar is having a great season as well, but only one guy can win it. If the Predators makes the playoffs and Josi is still playing well, he will win it, but if the Predators don’t make it, people could hold it against him and give it to Makar.
