The Red Sox-Blue Jays Series This Past Weekend Was Frankly…WEIRD

Baseball is a truly funny game. Sometimes, you outplay a team on the field, but it doesn’t show up on the scoreboard. Other times, a certain moment or sequence of moments can change the game around. The Red Sox played the Blue Jays this past weekend at Fenway Park and to be honest, the whole series was WEIRD to say the least.

Friday Night

The Red Sox went into the bottom of the 7th inning down 5-1. Chris Sale did not look like himself all night and the Red Sox once again were not scoring for him…shocker! But, the Red Sox fought back late and walked off in the bottom of the 10th inning thanks to a Christian Vazquez walk off two run homerun.

It just felt like the Red Sox would go down without a fight and lose the first game of the series. But they fought back and ended up taking the first game at Fenway, setting themselves up for another series win.

Saturday Afternoon

The Red Sox went into Saturday afternoon looking to take another series win. Things looked great as the Red Sox at one point were up 6-0 and led 6-1 going into the top of the 7th inning.

Then…the Red Sox bullpen came into play. The Red Sox bullpen has been the huge question mark during the regular season thus far. The big punch in the stomach came in the 8th inning when Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier gave up 4 walks, 2 hits, and 3 earned runs to surrender the lead for the Red Sox. They ultimately lost the game 8-7 and the dynamic of the series changed in favor of the Blue Jays.

Sunday Afternoon

Sunday afternoon was the Marcus Stroman show. Stroman, who often shows his passion for the game of baseball on the mound, kept the Red Sox in check on Sunday. He threw 6 scoreless innings, while only giving up 5 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Boston hitters looked off balanced all day and couldn’t string anything together against the Toronto right- hander. The Blue Jays took Sunday’s contest 6-1 and also took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox. This concluded a truly weird and unique series.

In Conclusion

This was a strange series from start to finish. It also was a bad series loss for the Red Sox, who just came off a great 2 out of 3 series win on the road against the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately, there is no time to fret about it as the White Sox come to Fenway for a 3 game series and then the London series with the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday. Win those two against the Yankees and prove to Red Sox nation you can still compete with the Yankees and make the pennant chase interesting come August and September.
