The McCourty Twins Need to Retire Together
It’s no secret that Devin and Jason McCourty came into the world together. However, their paths to and in the NFL have been different. It’s also not a secret that the McCourty twins are my favorite active NFL players. Therefore, in my not so humble opinion, they should leave the league together.
Contract Negotiations
The two defensive backs are both set to become free agents following the 2021 NFL season. The McCourty’s turned 34 in August, ancient for their positions. The brothers are both still effective on the gridiron, so it’s possible that they look to continue playing. It’s been a rumor for a couple of seasons that they were mulling retirement.
Impressive Careers
This is Jason’s 13th season in the NFL with his fourth team. He was a sixth round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2009. JMac was voted as team captain twice in his illustrious career. Once in Tennessee and once alongside Devin with the Patriots. After spending the last three seasons with his twin brother, Devin, in New England, Jason took his talents to South Beach. A jab right through my heart, a division rival.
Devin’s path to the NFL was different. He decided to stay at Rutgers University for his senior year and enter the NFL draft the year after his brother. He was drafted by New England in 2010 in the first round, twenty-seventh overall. Since then, DMac has been nothing short of impressive. He’s been selected to the Pro-Bowl twice. McCourty is an 11-time team captain who has never missed a start during his time in New England.
My Hope
I hope that the McCourty twins retire together, obviously, as members of the New England Patriots. Devin has played his entire 11-year career in New England whereas Jason has seen himself as a member of a few teams. Jason’s most prolific seasons may have been with other teams, he ended up on the biggest stage alongside his twin brother with the Patriots. It’s only fitting he leaves on a one-day contract where he received his Super Bowl ring.
Final Thoughts
As much as it pains me that Jason McCourty went to Miami in the offseason, I do love the progression of their NFL careers. From opponents to teammates to division rivals. Brings us a whole new level of sibling rivalry.
