The Boston Red Sox have a closer problem
You have to give the Boston Red Sox a lot of credit. After starting the season about as poorly as you possibly can, they’ve made their way to a 42-33 record. However, they lost last night to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 after having a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Alex Barth of 98.5 the Sportshub gave us a little insight into how bad the Red Sox have been without a true closer this year.
15th blown save for the Sox this year. Tied for the 2nd-most in baseball, with 4 to 7 fewer save opportunities than teams they’re tied with or behind
Even if you flip even half of those (and round down the odd number for dramatic effect), they’re 49-26, just 6 games behind NYY

Look at that stat. 15 blown saves and we’re not even done with June. If I’m the Red Sox, I’m embarrassed by the fact that we don’t have a true closer. And that’s just it.
The Boston Red Sox don’t have a true closer
This Boston Red Sox team lacks a true closer. I mean, really. Let’s look at all of the options that we could’ve had.
Matt Barnes? That didn’t work out after he signed his extension in July of 2021.
Hansel Robles? He’s been on a skid lately, including blowing last night’s game against the Blue Jays.
Tyler Danish? He should’ve been a one inning guy. But Alex Cora surprisingly asked him for two innings.
Tanner Houck? Maybe. But the vaccination status puts him up in the air if the Red Sox play Toronto in the playoffs.
John Schreiber? Also a maybe. He has been nails since he came up to the big league club.
Bottom line Red Sox management: get a closer!
It’s really incredibly simple. Go out and trade for a closer. You have the minor league system to do it. Don’t be giving me this, “It’s all about the long-term!” excuse. If you can win now, then win now. The Red Sox have reinforcements coming to help with the starting rotation, in Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, James Paxton and Garrett Whitlock. But now’s the time to go pursue a closer in a trade. Daniel Bard in Colorado is one option. David Robertson in Chicago is another option.
If the Red Sox really care about this team, then you need a closer. Otherwise, it’s going to continue to be a problem. And this problem will either eliminate you from the playoffs or take you out of the playoff race before it’s too late.
