After a promising start against the Rays, Chris Sale returned to the mound Sunday afternoon against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox were looking for their first A.L. East series win all season. Well, that didn’t happen. Worst of all, Chris Sale left the game after getting a line drive to his throwing hand pinky finger. It ended up being a fracture for Chris Sale, which ultimately means his 2022 season is done.

Chris Sale season done before it could really begin!
It really is a shame that Chris Sale’s season is basically over. The recovery time for his specific fracture takes about 6-8 weeks. At that point, it’ll be middle to late September. With the way this Red Sox team is going, there’s no way they’ll have Sale pitch for maybe 3 more starts at the maximum this year. It’s awful because he looked like the old Chris Sale against Tampa Bay. It looked like the spark the Red Sox needed. But in one swing, one moment, that all changed yesterday.
Is this the end for Chris Sale?
I really hope this isn’t the end for Chris Sale. But let’s look at the facts here. He hasn’t pitched that much in the past three years and he’s going into his age 34 season. What more can we realistically expect out of Chris Sale? Granted, the rib thing and the line drive were freak injuries. But they have kept him on the sidelines, along with the Tommy John surgery, since the end of the 2019 season. Sale still has three more years on his contract. But honestly with Chaim Bloom in charge, it wouldn’t surprise me if he found a way to trade Sale.
That should be the plan, right? Don’t resign Bogaerts or Devers. Let go of J.D. Martinez. Trade Sale and get younger. Such a great plan, right Chaim?
Bottom line is, you have to feel for Chris Sale here. He wants to be with his teammates. Now, he’s just getting snake-bitten with injuries. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of Chris Sale forever. But it looks like the 2022 season of Chris Sale is completely done!
