Which Side Are You On? Tom Brady or Bill Belichick?

Mike’s Monday Mantra

First off, every Monday post I am going to start off with, “Mike’s Monday Mantra.” Just a quote to set the tone for the week. Something to keep me on track as well as — hopefully — keep some of you on track. This weeks mantra:

“Even if your ambitions are huge, start slow, start small, build gradually, build smart.”
Gary Vaynerchuk, Crush It!: Why Now Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion

This CouchGuySports right here! Brick by brick! If you take the time and take a step towards a goal everyday there’s no reason why you can’t achieve that goal. That’s what we’re doing here. I’m glad I started off this with this quote because I woke up at 4am today to start my day because that’s what rich people do. Act the part be the part, right? Now back to our regular scheduled program.

A lot of people, especially from my generation, are now Tampa Bay fans and I don’t even think they’ll root for the Pats this year. Brady has left the biggest and craziest impact on so many New Englanders that I don’t blame them. The time has come and lines have to be drawn. The biggest debate was always who was more important to the Patriots, Tom Brady or Bill Belichick. After 20 years, we will finally see who really was the mastermind behind all the success. At least that’s what some people think. I’m on the fence about it.

Tom…

One side of me is thinking how Tom is 42 and not in his prime so how can you even compare it to if he was without Bill during his best years? The other side of me is full #PatsNation mode thinking how it’s Tom freaking Brady and he’ll never fall off the cliff so we will find out. However, I also think this argument is almost impossible because how you define success is subjective. Especially for Tom Brady in his 20th season, at 42. Is success a Super Bowl win, a playoff berth, a NFC Championship, — super weird to say — or is it just a good overall season? By Brady’s standards you would think it’s Super Bowl or bust but is that realistic? Probably not but then again, he broke our standards of realistic time and time again. Then you got Bill Belichick.

…or Bill?

How do you define success for a coach who not only lost the greatest quarterback of all time, but half his defense and has zero dollars to spend? In normal places, they would be happy with a positive record and maybe a playoff berth but this New England, baby! We don’t settle for that shit. Also, are we really going to leave Bill’s legacy up to how well Jarrett Stidham plays? Give me a break. Some people will run this though, which is crazy. Imagine if Bill doesn’t make the Playoffs and Tom does. People are going to seriously say how it was Tom Brady and not Bill Belichick. That’s unbelievably unfair but the world we live. I’m a “love for everyone” type of person and that’s what I’m going to be here as well. It doesn’t make for good debates but it’s a better world to live in. I can’t wait to see Tom in a Bucs jersey and I cannot wait to see what the Pats look like. I’m all about the story of sports and it feels like I just picked up a brand new book.
