Suplex Biddies: Captain Insano to show no mercy in AEW?

All Elite Wrestling continues to make waves in the wrestling world and on Feb. 24 they made a giant announcement. The company had signed former WCW and WWE superstar Paul Wight to a multi-year contract. His new deal will allow him to be both a wrestler and commentator.

Wight who has been with the WWE since 1999 made the surprise move to AEW. There was internet speculation regarding Wight’s WWE status when he was moved to their alumni page back on Feb. 19.

Speculation regarding wrestling rumors is always running rampant on social media. When a WWE talent is moved to the alumni section there is always speculation it could be a work. The WWE could use that as an angle regarding their talent. In this case it was not and Wight moved on to AEW.

“It’s been amazing to watch what AEW has built in just a couple of years,” said Wight. “AEW Dark is an incredible platform to hone the skills of up-and-coming wrestlers, but I also love that established AEW talent can build out their personalities and showcase themselves in new ways on Dark. It’s no exaggeration when they say that AEW is boundless.”

No More BS

During his run in WWE, Wight was known as the “Big Show”. When he made his surprise debut on TNT, Wight came to out wearing a new shirt which was a clear shot to his former gimmick.

The giant came out and interviewed with AEW commentator Tony Schiavone. The two men spent time together back in the mid-90’s when they both worked for WCW. Wight would talk about his new role in AEW and would make a huge announcement. The veteran superstar announced that AEW would be adding a “hall-of-fame worthy” talent to their roster.

That superstar ended up being former WWE talent Christian.

New Gimmick?

Wrestling fans may remember back in 1998 when Wight was in the hit movie The Waterboy. At the beginning of the movie the world was introduced to Captain Insano. Now, the wrestling world might finally be introduced Captain Insano in the squared circle.

AEW filed for a trademark for the rights to the Captain Insano. The trademark was filed on March 3 is meant for video games versus him as an actual performer in the ring.

Wight is far removed from the years when the WWE Universe was chanting “please retire”. His move to AEW feels like a revitalization to the veteran’s career. Furthermore, he will be able to put over the younger and fresh talent on AEW.

His debut was nothing like when he came to WWF at the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Just remember, “Captain Insano shows no mercy.” However, I am going to miss the WWE theme song for Wight, “Wellllllll, well it’s the Big Show”.
