#SoccerSaturday – Manchester United vs. Liverpool: Battle for 1st Place

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to another #SoccerSaturday!

In this weeks’ blog, the English premier league is bringing us a massive must-watch. Oh yes, it is the battle for first place between Manchester United and Liverpool.

So what should we expect from both sides? Here are some thoughts and my prediction for this match.

Manchester United.

United comes into this game with momentum on their side. However, injuries will need to be carefully managed by Solskjaer and company. People like Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic are currently injuries to watch for. While Jones and Williams are not much of a factor lately, Martial and Matic are hard to replace.

I will say though, this team is highly motivated and rightfully so. It has been a long while since United has ranked 1st in the league. As stated previously, last time United did this in 17 games, they were managed by Ferguson and went onto winning the league.

The focus for United will need to continue to stay in place and the motivation as well. A formation I would like United to bring to this game would the following:

  • Goalie: David De Gea.
  • Defense: Telles, Maguire, Bailly, Wan Bissaka.
    • In front of the 4, put McTominay.
  • Midfield: Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba.
  • Forward: Edison Cavani, Anthony Martial.

Formation suggested for this game: 4-1-3-2.

Liverpool FC.

For Liverpool, not only is this game a highly competitive one but it is also one they will want to win. A victory for Liverpool could translate for them to be back on first place and take the lead due to goal differential.

The downside for Liverpool is the continuous need for a strong center-back duo. Losing Virgil Van Djik early in the season due to ACL tear, after a disgusting play by David De Gea, has created many issues for this Liverpool side.

The upside for Liverpool is this game is at home for them, Liverpool has been strong while playing at home and although fans won’t be around, rest assure this will be a clinical match to watch.

My thoughts for a formation that Liverpool should bring to this game would be the following:

A formation of 4-3-3 would allow Liverpool to open up this game a bit. However, will struggle to keep competitive on the sides as they will need to get past Wan Bissaka and Shaw/Telles.

Score Prediction.

I think this game will be fairly close. Both teams are playing excellent football and continue to be very competitive. For Solskjaer, this will be a feat for him to win as he will finally get to work a season without a lot of scrutiny of whether he should be sacked or not.

Meanwhile for Liverpool, this is a game of importance to them as they will want to keep that dominant behavior alive. However, they need to watch for injuries as the Champions League is back very soon and they can’t afford to continue running big risks with such big title possibilities ahead for them.

My score prediction for this match is a 2-1 victory for United. I would be pleasantly happy should the game end in a tie, as that is the most likely outcome for this game. However, should Liverpool win, it’ll be hard not to think these guys could go out to win it all this year.
