We’ve seen a lot of craziness happen in the NBA over the past few years. Anthony Davis went to the Lakers and won a title. The Warriors actually didn’t even come close to making the playoffs. (Thanks to significant injuries!) But what we care about is the Boston Celtics. The Celtics made it back to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in four seasons, before falling to the Miami Heat is six games. The Celtics are missing something. Something big. Could that big be Andre Drummond? Apparently, the Celtics are monitoring that situation with Drummond in Cleveland.

So the Celtics may be looking at Andre Drummond. Should the Celtics be entertaining the thought of Drummond in green? Let’s discuss.
The Celtics Rebounding Woes
This has been a great concern for the Celtics for a number of years. Andre Drummond could obviously fill a HUGE void in that department. In seven of his eight NBA seasons, Drummond has averaged double digits for total rebounds. This would theoretically make sense to help the Celtics take a step forward. Enes Kanter looks like he’s going to be testing free agency and essentially gone next year. Drummond wouldn’t hurt there.
The Contract and Year
Andre Drummond is in the last year of a five year deal. He’s scheduled to make almost 29 million dollars this season. In 2021, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. This concerns me a LOT. He’s in a contract year making close to 30 million, which is essentially a max deal in my eyes. I don’t get why Drummond is making that kind of money. Sure, he’s a two time All-star and one of the best rebounding big men in the NBA. But what has he done in his career besides that? Granted, he’s been on some horrible Detroit and Cleveland teams. But is the risk of losing Drummond after one year really worth it to the Celtics? I’m not so sure.
The Celtics Needs
On one hand, Drummond fulfills the rebounding need. On the other hand, the Celtics have other glaring needs. A scorer off the bench anyone? Maybe another big that could be a cheaper option similar to Kanter this year? It could very well be that the Celtics address those needs. But we’ll see what Danny Ainge thinks is the Celtics top priority this offseason.
Do I think the Celtics should get Andre Drummond? Only if they found a way to not have to inhale that big contract. Plus, the contract year thing always scares me. So personally, no. I think you can get better and cheaper options to get this team in a better position for the 2020-2021 season. Danny Ainge, do the right thing here please? Don’t bring on Drummond with that huge contract! We beg you. We’re SOOOOO close to being title contenders. Try to find a better (and obviously cheaper) option.
