Should Jon Lester be remembered as a Red Sox or a Cub?
Former Red Sox ace left-handed pitcher Jon Lester announced his retirement last week from the game of baseball. Lester was a member of the Red Sox, Athletics, Cubs, Nationals, and Cardinals. However, Lester spent most of his career between two teams: the Red Sox and Cubs. So this question popped into my head and I want to analyze it: which team should Jon Lester be remember from? The Red Sox or the Cubs? Let’s look more into this intriguing question.
Jon Lester as a Boston Red Sox
Jon Lester spent half of his 16 year MLB career with the Boston Red Sox. Lester was a bonafide ace towed the later part of his Red Sox career. Remember, this is a guy that beat cancer and went on to help the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007. Then in 2013, he was the ace that helped the Red Sox win the World Series in a year where they probably shouldn’t have won it all. But they did! Overall, Lester was a three time All-star with Boston, while having 110 wins and a 3.64 ERA. Not too shabby by Lester!
Jon Lester as a Chicago Cub
Jon Lester signed with the Chicago Cubs back in 2015 to help the Cubs reverse the “curse of the Billy Goat”. It seemed to work out for the Cubs as they won the World Series in 2016. Lester was that veteran presence that was heavily wanted by Theo Epstein, who if you remember, was with the Red Sox first! Lester was a one time All-star for the Cubs while having 77 wins and a 3.64 ERA. (No that isn’t a typo either!) Jon Lester was consistently big for the Cubs in postseason games, similar to how he was with the Red Sox.
In Conclusion and My Decision
I think Jon Lester should be remembered as a Red Sox first, then a Cub. Yes, he helped the Cubs and was crucial to them being relevant in the National league. But he was drafted by the Red Sox. He considered the Red Sox his new home. Heck, he was even considering strongly coming back to Boston before signing with Chicago! That tells me everything I need to know right there. The two World Series titles in ’07 and ’13 definitely help the case too. Maybe it’s the Red Sox fandom in me saying all of this. So I would love to hear all of your thoughts too. Bring them on!
