Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl Preview

Saturday morning, we have a great matchup on deck. The matchup is the Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl, and the two teams are Appalachian State (10-3) and Western Kentucky (8-5). We got a team from that lost in the Sun Belt championship going up against a team that lost in the C-USA championship. This is going to be a must watch game and with that being said here is my preview for this Boca Raton Bowl.

Appalachian State

Appalachian State was a team to be reckoned with in the Sun Belt this season. They have lost three games all season one of which came all the way back in week number two against the University of Miami. Since the beginning of November, the Mountaineers have given up more than twenty points only once and that was their loss in the Sun Belt title game. The defense is fantastic against the run, however the Hilltoppers rarely run the football. If Appalachian State wants to win this game, they are going to have to contain Western Kentucky’s high powered passing game.

For the Appalachian State offense, they need to do what they do best and that is control the tempo of the game. Run the football and keep Western Kentucky’s offense off the field is a recipe of success for them. Appalachian State will need to do this in order to succeed in winning the Boca Raton bowl. Look for veteran quarterback Chase Brice to try and control the tempo of the game. Brice has been great this season for the Mountaineers, and he will look to do more of the same in their bowl game.

Western Kentucky 

The nation’s leading passer is none other than Bailey Zappe. Zappe has been a phenomenal transfer for the Hilltoppers. He has thrown for 5,531 passing yards to go along with 56 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions. This Western Kentucky offense looks a lot better than a season ago. Zappe has the potential to put this offense over 500 total yards of offense all on his own. He has been absolutely electric for this team, and we should see more of the same from him in the bowl game.

The Hilltopper defense is also pretty solid, and they make big plays of their own in key situations. They are fourth in the nation in takeaways, which isn’t a good thing for Appalachian State who turns over the ball a lot. This game will not be a defensive heavy game, as both offenses will explode in this matchup. People will be watching Bailey Zappe more than anything in this game, but this game will be a must watch to kick off a full slate on Saturday.

Prediction:

Right now, Appalachian State are 3-point favorites and the over/under is set at 66.5. I am leaning on the over here, the only thing that is holding me back is the potential of Appalachian State running the football a lot and keeping Bailey Zappe off of the field. So, my official play is going to be Western Kentucky +3. The Hilltoppers are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games as an underdog. Also, this season as a three-point underdog the Hilltoppers have covered two out of three times. Can’t wait to watch Bailey Zappe continue his hot streak of fantastic games on Saturday morning.
