Do the Predators need to sell or buy by the trade deadline?
Twenty-eight games into the season, the Nashville Predators are 17-10-1(35 points).
The Predators are in a better position than most people thought they would be in almost half way through the season. They shocked the fan base by letting go some fan favorites in a “competitive rebuild” to try something new. Since the 2016-17 Stanley Cup run, the Preds have gotten progressively worse each season. The Preds will be more sellers than buyers. David Poile is not really a seller and has always been in that “win now” mode.
With the team much younger than recent past, they will either sell or stay put. From 2010-2020, only three 1st round picks are still on the team and all three are 23 years old or younger. The Predators didn’t have 1st round picks in 4 of those years. If the team is sellers, who are some players that could be on the move?
Filip Forsberg
Let’s go ahead and get the obvious one out of the way. Forsberg is the team’s best forward and has been for a couple years now. The scoring machine is on the last year of his contract and is looking to get paid and rightfully so. He deserves the money, but with the team already having large contracts in Duchene, Johansen and Josi, the team may not be able to afford him. Fans would be furious if he doesn’t get re-sign. If the afford them, they need to trade him by the deadline and get some picks and prospects out of it.

Either of these guys could be on the move for a defenseman needy team. The Preds have other defenseman in the system that could come up and play like Philippe Myers, Ben Harper, and other guys down in the AHL. This move isn’t likely, but wouldn’t be surprised if one of those guys are on the move.
