Ronda Rousey to play Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11
“The Big Reveal” for Mortal Kombat 11 took place today, and they had plenty of gory details to spill for the next entry in the franchise made famous for outrageously bloody bouts.
They showed off new ultimate weapons, some new fatalities, talked about the new story, and returning characters. Most notably, a returning Skarlet that was solely a DLC character in MK9, and didn’t make the roster for MK10. Of course, that included your regular Scorpion, Sub Zero, Raiden, Sonya Blade.
More surprisingly, however, Sonya was announced to be played by “a real-life badass,” as series creator Ed Boon put it.
They rolled footage to reveal that Sonya Blade is played by the most notorious woman in MMA, and current WWE Women’s champion: Ronda Rousey.
Along with footage of Sonya whipping ass, Ronda would talk about her memories as a kid playing the original Mortal Kombat.
“Sonya Blade was the first kick-ass girl I saw come onto the scene,” says Rousey in the video streamed during the event. “I admittedly kind of emulated her in my own way. And now I get to try and be her.”
Personally, I was hoping for Cody Rhodes as Johnny Cage, but this is pretty sick too. Ronda is a great fit for the part. A major similarity between the two being Sonya Blade was the first female fighter in the history of Mortal Kombat, and Ronda Rousey is the first female UFC champion. They also share some moves, they perform on their opponents, such as arm-bars and similar grapples. If you don’t believe me, check out the reveal below.
Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23rd on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
