Roman Reigns vacates Universal title due to leukemia

Roman Reigns is probably the most divisive wrestler in WWE history, but be it booed or cheered, he always gets a loud reaction. Tonight he was showered in sympathetic chants, as he announced he would be taking a step away from WWE, and also vacating the Universal Championship to receive treatment for leukemia.

As I mentioned, Roman is an extremely polarizing WWE superstar, but it’s important that we separate the characters we see in media from their real life counterpart.

That being said, while not the biggest fan of Roman Reigns myself, I feel nothing but heartbroken and sympathetic for Joseph Anoaʻi. Being a WWE superstar is a tough, demanding role, and being the top face of the company is another league beyond being in just a mid-card role. You never stop being on the road, traveling from India one night, to Chicago the very next, to the UK the night after. Roman has put his life into this role, and it’s a horrible occurrence to see it being taken away from him. He is a warrior though, and he is positive he will be back.

“I’m coming back because I want to show you all at home and my family and my children and my wife that when life throws a curveball at me, I will choke up and I will swing for the fences every single time. I will beat this and I will be back so you will see me very, very soon.”

Thank you Roman.
