Red Sox and Matt Barnes are in agreement on a two year contract extension!
Happy Sunday everyone! I’m going to be at a wedding later. However, I couldn’t help to get a quick blog up about this big Sunday news. No, it isn’t the Red Sox getting Jack Leiter just yet. (Well…hopefully!) It’s actually about closer Matt Barnes. The Boston Globe reported earlier this morning that the Red Sox and Matt Barnes are in agreement on a two year contract extension, with a club option for 2024!

Terms of Barnes deal, which is two years, $18.75M with an option:
2022: $7.25m
2023: $7.5m
2024 Club Option: $8m
Buyout: $2.25m
Signing bonus: $1.75m

Matt Barnes is the Red Sox Closer for the Foreseeable Future
That heading felt great to type out! Now I’ll admit, I was skeptical about Barnes being your full-time closer coming into the 2021 season. In the past, Barnes had been a guy more comfortable in a set-up role. But Matt Barnes back to the Red Sox for two more seasons, potentially three, solidifies your closer for the next several seasons. Give a guy like Durbin Feltman more time in the minors to develop for the future.
Add More Than Just Matt Barnes, Red Sox!
Now that Barnes is locked in until at least 2023, this turns our attention back to the draft for a quick second. If you can add Leiter or Kumar Rocker tonight, you have options now for 2022. You can have a rotation of Chris Sale, Nick Pivetta, Nathan Eovaldi, Eduardo Rodriguez, and then potentially one of the two guys mentioned before. Get Garrett Richards and Matt Andriese out of here! Martin Perez can maybe be a long relief option for you? There’s plenty that you can do for this team going forward if you draft correctly tonight.
