Predicting how the NBA All-Star Rosters Might Look

This week, the NBA and NBPA announced that they would be changing the All-Star game format we have all been so familiar with for 66 years. It will be the first ever All-Star game where captains are voted for by the fans, and then they get to choose who they want on their team out of a pool of players voted in by NBA writers, players, and fans. The captain of each team will be decided based on who receives the most votes from each conference.

I am a huge fan of this move. The All-Star game has been the same for the entirety of its existence, a change was necessary. The NFL tried a similar format out for a couple years and I thought it was pretty cool, but they did end up going back to conference vs. conference. I bet the NBA will do the same and try this out for a season or two, then go back to the normal East vs. West format.

According to the announcement above, each conference must have twelve representatives. This includes the five starters, along with reserves consisting of two guards, three frontcourt players, and two players at any position.

If I had to guess, Curry and LeBron will end up being the captains out of each conference, so who would they pick? I tried to guess who each captain would end up with based on my understanding of how this format works:

STARTERS (projection): John Wall (G), Kyrie Irving (G), LeBron James (F), Giannis Antetokounmpo (F), Kevin Love (F/C), Steph Curry (G), Russell Westbrook (G), Kevin Durant (F), Kawhi Leonard (F), Anthony Davis (F/C)

RESERVES (projection): James Harden (G), Chris Paul (G), Klay Thompson (G), Jimmy Butler (G/F), Karl-Anthony Towns (F/C), Paul George (F), Draymond Green (F), Kyle Lowry (G), Kemba Walker (G), Andre Drummond (C), Kristaps Porzingas (F/C), Gordon Hayward (F), Al Horford (F/C), DeMar DeRozan (G)

Team Curry (projection):

STARTERS: Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo

RESERVES: James Harden, Klay Thompson, Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingas, Al Horford

Team LeBron (projection):

STARTERS: Russell Westbrook, John Wall, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kevin Love

RESERVES: Chris Paul, Kemba Walker, Karl-Anthony Towns, Paul George, Gordon Hayward, Andre Drummond, Demar DeRozan

While this format will definitely be interesting to watch, we’re going to see a lot of guys get snubbed out West. Guys like Cousins, Lillard, Aldridge, Griffin etc. could very well end up not making it just because of how much talent moved into their conference this summer.

We’re months away from actually having to think to about this, but it’s still fun to speculate. I’m sure my picks will be all sorts of wrong.
