Pick Three: New England Restaurant Edition

Listen, I get it that there are a few sports events going on lately. “The Last Dance” premiered on Sunday with the first two parts. The NFL Draft is coming up on Thursday. I get it, I really do. But you know what? I’m going to change it up a bit. If you follow the site religiously, you’ll know I posted one of these scenarios on Saturday.

As I was going through my everyday routine in quarantine, my girlfriend Courtney sent me this interesting one.

First off, shoutout to the girlfriend for knowing the key to my heart. You’re the best! Now, we’re talking about some high quality places to eat in New England. So which ones will make the grade? Which ones will just miss the cut? And which ones are just flat out not even close? Let’s dive in!

D’Angelo’s: IN

I’m a HUGE sub guy. For me, I need a place that can make my sub how I like it exactly. D’Angelos has always done the trick for me. The way that they toast the bread is absolutely perfect. There’s other places for good subs such as Subway and Firehouse Subs. But if you have a D’Angelo’s near you, it’s a solid place to eat at. D’Angelo’s got the final nod to sneak into my three.

Ninety Nine: Honorable Mention

Man, the amount of times I went to the 99 is unreal. Personally, I wasn’t a big fan of the popcorn there. I know, WEIRD take! The food was good for younger me. Chicken tenders and fries were quite the meal to get there. The restaurant is a good choice, but not good enough for me to make my top three.

Bertucci’s: OUT

If it’s the only pizza place on this list, I might reconsider. But that isn’t the case, so Bertucci’s is out. I’m not sure what it is about Bertucci’s that rubs me the wrong way here. It’s okay, but it wasn’t one of my favorites growing up. Sorry Bertucci’s, maybe next time.

Legal Sea Foods: OUT

Not a big seafood guy, if we’re going to be honest. Moving on!

Papa Gino’s: Honorable Mention

Papa Gino’s is a solid option for pizza in New England. If you like rustic pizza, then Papa Gino’s is the place for you. There was a time where a friend got so sick, that he never ate it again. That takes a little bit of it away for me. If not for an option later in this article, Papa Gino’s probably gets the nod.

Friendly’s: IN

If you’re from New England and you don’t remember this commercial, then kindly see yourself out. This song made Friendly’s a can’t miss spot. The menu itself wasn’t too bad. But the reason Friendly’s gets on for me is the ice cream. The sundaes just hit different. Even a scoop of regular ice cream was worth it. Damn, now I really want to go to Friendly’s!

Not Your Average Joe’s: OUT

I haven’t been enough to Not Your Average Joe’s to give it a fair description. Honestly, I think I went once after a baseball game my junior year of college with my mom. Never went back after that. I don’t think it was that bad. It was just a case where I never passed it that much after that encounter.

Regina Pizzeria: IN

This was an easy IN for me on this list. Regina Pizzeria is one of the best pizza places out there. Yes, I’ve had Santarpio’s as well. Regina still does it for me. The cheese always comes out absolutely perfect. It’s always hot, fresh, and ready to go. Whatever dough they use to hold up the pizza, keep doing it because it’s working really well. Overall, a solid bite. Dave Portnoy gave this place a 9.1 out of 10. That’s an incredible score on the one bite scale.

Yeah, I’m sticking with Prez on this one.

Kelly’s Roast Beef: Honorable Mention

If you want a good cheeseburger or hotdog, then Kelly’s is the place for you. Not even kidding, I live walking distance to a Kelly’s and didn’t have it until I was in college. Weird, I know. Here on the North Shore, there are plenty of places to grab a nice roast beef sandwich. I’ve realized that Kelly’s lacks behind big time. So, I’m going to be nice and give it an honorable mention. Maybe if some of the beefs are better, I’ll reconsider. For now, it can be in the honorable mention category.

In Conclusion

There you have it! My three choices are Regina Pizzeria, D’Angelo’s, and Friendly’s for dessert. What are your choices? Feel free to tweet your three choices to my personal twitter or Couch Guy’s twitter, @CouchGuySports. Let the debates continue on!
