Patriots Week 9: The Ghosts of Patriots Defense Haunts Sam Darnold

The New England Patriots entered Week 9 on a 3 game winning streak coming off a big win in Week 8 against the LA Chargers.

The team is 4-4 and getting hot at the right time as they headed to Carolina looking for their 4th consecutive win.

The Patriot’s defense came up huge in the game, completely suffocating Sam Darnold and the Panthers Offense.

So, with that being said, as usual, let’s break it down!!

Defense Brings Back Sam Darnold’s Ghosts.

It was not that long ago when the Jets and Patriots were playing on Monday Night Football in 2019. Roughly a week from Halloween, the so-called “boogeymen” of the Patriot’s defense came out and made Sam Darnold turn the ball over 5 times. The QB admitted that he was “seeing ghosts” on the field, and well, the rest is history.

Fast forward two years, same QB, different team, as the Patriots defense visited Carolina and reminded the QB, that the ghosts are still there.

Patriots were able to get 3 interceptions off Darnold, 2 by J.C. Jackson, and 1 by Jamie Collins.

Meanwhile, Mathew Judon continued his reign of terror and got yet another sack making it 9.5 for the Patriots Linebacker.

Christian Barmore also made his presence felt in the backfield once again with multiple pressures that included three hurries, two batted passes, and two-run stops in a massive game for the rookie.

All in all, it was an absolutely dominating day for the defense who has seemed to find their groove at the right time.

Rushing Attack Proves Big for the Offense.

Coming into this game the Panthers had one of the best passing attacks in the game, which meant you were going to most likely see a lot of the rushing attack for the Patriots.

That in fact was the case as the Patriots combined for over 150 yards of rushing and 1 touchdown. That alone played a big part in the offensive scheme for the team, which would lead them to a victory.

Passing-wise, the rushing game was able to open up the passing game as Mac Jones threw for 139 yards, and a touchdown on 12 for 18 passing.

Rhamondre Stevenson led all receivers with 44 yards, Hunter Henry accounted for the lone receiving touchdown.

It was not the prettiest day on offense, but it got the job done and got the team its fourth straight win making the team 5-4 heading into Week 10.

The Patriots have now outscored their opponents 105-40 in the last three games. A big reason for that is the lockdown defense, but the offense has just as much to do with it.

Recapping the Patriots Week 9 Win.

All in all, it was a successful week for New England, it was one of those wins that weren’t the best but still got the job done in the end. Obviously, some things that need to be worked on going into Week 10.

The biggest thing to take though is that the Patriots are getting hot at the right time and with only a half-game out of 1st in the AFC East, the Patriots are looking more and more like a threat as they start making a big push to the postseason.
