Patriots Week 2 Recap: Defense Shines in Win vs. Jets

It was a beautiful afternoon for a football game in the Meadowlands on Sunday for a Week 2 AFC East matchup. For the first time in 62 years, the Patriots and Jets rivalry saw the two teams trot out first-year Quarterbacks. There was a stark difference between the two, both had their struggles, but the Jets rookie seemed to have struggled the most.

The Jets rookie threw four, yes four picks to the Patriots defense, each one is seemingly worse than the last.

It would be the New England Patriots that would pull out the 25-6 win bouncing back from their Week 1 loss.

So, let’s break it down.

How did the Offense Look in Week 2?

It certainly was not an easy game for Rookie QB, Mac Jones, and the offense. The team only mustered up one touchdown in the win. Something Mac Jones says will be fixed. The rookie started after getting his first career win “The offense could play better and it will.”

All in all Mac Jones and the offense got the job done. Regardless of the 3 sacks that were made by the Jets defense, the offensive line held up well except for the right tackle which saw some blown plays. Mac Jones’s final line was 22 for 30 with 186 yards. The receiving corps was led by James White who had 45 yards on 6 catches. Hunter Henry saw 2 targets for 42 yards.

Rushing-wise, the lone touchdown came from Damien Harris who saw 16 carries for 62 yards.

All in all the offense does have some work to do, but they are on the right track.

How did the Defense Look in Week 2?

Now, for the saving grace of the Patriots in Week 2, the defense. Outside of the run defense getting gashed up the middle again, the Patriots’ pass protection looked fantastic, picking off the rookie Zach Wilson four times. While also sacking him 4 times.

JC Jackson had 2 of those aforementioned interceptions.

The team came up big in crucial spots late in the game and practically carried this team to the win.

Josh Uche came in the clutch with 2 sacks, Juwan Bentley led the team in tackles with 8, and was a maniac in the backfield all afternoon.

Wrapping Up the Patriots Week 2 Win.

It was a successful week all around for the New England Patriots. Nothing to major to freak out about, along with the team getting its first win of the season. That is the biggest thing though. The team got their first win in a gutsy performance where they had to overcome adversity. With a rookie manning the controls at QB, that is a huge step you were able to take with that win today.

Other than that, it is the simple things that need to be fixed. Penalties and ball carrying being the biggest, and those are easy fixes.

Let’s also remember that it is only Week 2 and there is still plenty of time to get better. Especially with a rookie QB, there are going to be rough spots. There are going to be games like the one yesterday where you got to win ugly. Just take the win, and practice your mistakes next week. They will come into form soon, just need to give them time.

What to look for in Week 3.

Week 3 will see the New England Patriots head back to Foxboro to face Jameis Winston and the New Orleans Saints. The Saints, who just lost to Carolina on Sunday will look to bounce back from their bad performance.

The biggest question for New England will be, Trent Brown. We saw that the right side of the line struggled mightily against the Jets, and Brown is back in the O-Line fold next week would be a massive improvement on the line and for the young Quarterback.

The New England Patriots will host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September, 26th at 1 pm on FOX.
