One of the best athletes in the NFL is about to get paid big time.
Yesterday, multiple sources reported that the Giants and WR Odell Beckham Jr. are on pace to agree to a record-breaking contract before the start of the season. While all of the details aren’t available yet, we can get an idea of how much OBJ will get by taking a look at the other WR contracts around the league.
“Record-breaking” probably indicates Odell will be the highest paid WR in NFL history. Seems pretty cut and dry, right? But will it be record-breaking per year or by total salary? The highest paid WR in the NFL right now, per year, is Antonio Brown, who just signed a 4-year, $68M contract last off-season. By total salary, the highest paid WR is Mike Evans, who agreed to a 5-year, $82.5M contract earlier this off-season. And I’m pretty sure Calvin Johnson still holds the highest contract of all-time by a wide receiver at 8-years, $132M. So if I had to guess, Odell is going to be somewhere close to those numbers. I would say 5-years, $100M sounds about right. That would put Odell at an average of $20M per season, which would be the highest average salary for a wide receiver in NFL history.
Here’s the question I’m sure we’re going to see once Odell does sign; Is he worth all of that money? People are going to bring up the injury concerns and his character issues. To me, that’s all a load of bull-shit. Yes, he’s been nicked up a couple times, with last year’s season-ending ankle injury being the worst. But it’s football, people get hurt, especially wide receivers. They’re arguably the most vulnerable guys out there on offense. Injury problems are not a concern (to me) for OBJ. His character, while questionable at times, is an easy fix. He’s a fiery competitor who just wants to win. If the Giants actually surround him with guys who know how to play football, I’m sure that would go away.
Athletes like Odell Beckham Jr. don’t come around too often. He’s a generational talent. He’s a top-3 WR in the NFL, that is an indisputable fact. Try arguing me on it. He deserves to get paid like he’s the best, and he’s going to be, very soon.
