In five weeks players will begin to report to Spring Training for the upcoming season. There are still a majority of the top free agents available on the market. One free agent is growing frustrated with his former team and has asked his agent to talk to other teams.
DJ LeMahieu and the Yankees are coming off a two-year deal with New York. During his time in the Bronx, he hit .336 with 36 home runs, 129 RBI’s and a slash line of .386/.536/.922. LeMahieu won the 2020 American League batting title during the COVID shortened season.
On Sunday night, news began to circulate that LeMahieu has asked his representatives to engage with other teams.

This is the first time that the Red Sox have been publicly connected to LeMahieu. It’s uncertain as to their level of interest or whether chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom was merely just checking in. The feeling that LeMahieu and the Yankees would just reunite is now feeling like he’s ready to move on.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown, LeMahieu is looking for a five-years and $110 million. The Red Sox have the ability to spend and based off their moves thus far makes it seem unlikely they are shopping at the top of the market. Based off Bloom’s moves and focus on retooling the farm system, its unlikely Boston would sign LeMahieu. Any team who signs the veteran second baseman will have to surrender a draft pick due to the qualifying offer attached to him.
Leverage for LeMahieu?
As Spring Training approach, players and teams will begin to complete deals. LeMahieu is now one of the few free agents making it public they are frustrated with the process and his former team.
This could be leverage by LeMahieu’s agents by floating the Yahoo Sports story out there on Sunday. The 32-year-old LeMahieu will now begin to engage with other teams that reportedly includes the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mets, Cardinals and Dodgers.
LeMahieu is expected to meet with teams virtually this week. The news from this story will put added pressure on Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The Yankees have had a relatively quiet offseason making minor moves.

Red Sox in the mix?
The Red Sox potentially will be doing their due diligence regarding LeMahieu. If the former Yankees second baseman does indeed want to leave New York, Boston should check in. The Red Sox have a need at second base and the money to get a deal done with the free agent.
Boston has internal options to fill the void at second but none of those players are the caliber of LeMahieu. If the Red Sox added LeMahieu, the reigning American League batting champion would add to an already formidable lineup.
It’s ultimately unclear the true level of interest Boston has in LeMahieu. The next few weeks will paint a clear picture as to what free agency holds for the Red Sox and the remainder of free agents.
