Kyler Murray, former Oklahoma Sooner’s quarterback, is facing a unique predicament. Should he go pro in baseball or in football?
Now, most elite athletes could go pro in either sport. In fact, many quarterbacks are drafted by an MLB team. However, what makes Murray’s situation so unique is that he was a first round pick in baseball and many draft boards have him as a first round pick for football. So which should he choose?
In my opinion, Murray needs to go play baseball. For one, there are countless examples of players (specifically quarterbacks) who lit up college but never could quite cut it at the NFL level. These guys were typically great runners and were good enough throwers to hit the wide open receivers of the NFL.
If Murray goes pro in football, he’ll forever be associated with some all time great NCAA players who were poor NFL players like Johnny Manziel, Tim Tebow, Vince Young, Troy Smith, Terrell Pryor, and many more.
Not only is football a poor choice for Murray, baseball is a good choice. I don’t much about Murray as a baseball player, but from what I hear, he’s a tremendous fielder. He already has $4 million waiting for him. Not to mention, baseball has a plethora of average players who still make big money.
If Murray is a baseball bust, he could still be a journeyman player who makes a very good living. If he’s a bust in football, he could be out of a job in a few years. Also, the considerably lower risk of injury in baseball should make the decision a no brainer.
Ultimately, Murray is going to make the decision based on what he’s more passionate about. Even if he knows baseball is the better choice, he may choose football because of the stardom involved. While Murray is an electric players, those skills won’t necessary convert to the NFL, especially as a quarterback.
The sports world will be on the edge of their seat, waiting to see what Murray decides to do.
