Now that it is May 1, it is time to review the first month of the 2019 MLB season. One of the main headlines has been the ridiculous month that Los Angeles Dodgers 1B / OF Cody Bellinger had in April. In 31 games, Bellinger is hitting .431(!) with 14 homers (!!) and 37 RBIs (!!!).
What he has did in April, 2019 was insanity. Bellinger broke various records and pretty much dominated the entire month. He literally got on base more than half of his plate appearances with an on-base percentage of .508.
How is he doing it? Bellinger has cut his strikeout rate by more than half of what it was last year. In 2018 Bellinger struck out on about 24% of his at-bats, while for the month of April of this year, he has only racked up a K in the scorebook 11.4% of the time. Bellinger is also rocking the ball every time he makes contact. His hard contact rate is at a staggering 56.7% right now which is flat-out unbelievable.
There is no-doubt that Bellinger will fall back to earth at some point. The pace he is currently it at is unattainable for a full season. There is a reason that Ted Williams is the last hitter to hit for a .400 average. It is a very tough ting to do. Still, Bellinger’s improvement is undeniable and it was amazing to see what he was able to do in the first mont of the year.
