Jonathan Araúz was the improbable hero in the Red Sox comeback victory Friday night

It’s been a few weeks since the Red Sox had a good win. A win that made you feel good about the direction of the team. The first half of the season Red Sox were special. There was never a game in which they were losing where you’d actually think they were out of it.

On Friday night in Cleveland, the Red Sox were trailing late in the game. Heading into the top of the eighth, the Indians were holding a 3-1 lead. What would happen next was reminiscent of the first half of the season Sox.

Jonathan Araúz was the unlikely hero

Cleveland would send reliever James Karinchak to the mound. Karinchak would walk Christian Vazquez who led off the inning. He would then allow a hit to center from Jarren Duran, moving Vazquez to second.

With two runners on and no one out, Jonathan Araúz would step to the plate looking to move the runners over. Instead, Araúz would provide some comeback magic for the Sox.

After multiple failed attempts to bunt, Karinchak would throw Araúz a 3-2 fastball.

Araúz quickly caught up to the fastball and drove the ball 375-feet over the right field wall.

Memorable moment for Jonathan Araúz

The rookie was the unlikely hero and stepped up when his team needed it the most.

Araúz’s three-run home run was his first of the season. It also was Boston’s 10th comeback victory when trailing after the seventh inning this season.

“Obviously I’m very aware of what happened today, what happened to the team and where the team was at that moment. I also obviously remember it was my first home run of the year. And the combination of the day, my first home run, put the team ahead late in the game, it was a huge home run for me,” said Araúz.

“I know I’m not going to forget this home run.”

Araúz would finish the game going 1-for-2 with the one home run, 3 RBIs, and a walk.

Last minute recall from Triple-A Worcester

Prior to the game, Araúz wasn’t expecting to be with the team in Cleveland. The 23-year-old was recalled along with Yairo Muñoz from Triple-A WorcesterYairo Muñoz from Triple-A Worcester.

They arrived roughly 90 minutes before first pitch.

The two were added to the big-league roster because Kiké Hernández was placed on the COVID-related IL. Christian Arroyo was considered a close contact and is also out.

The rally win for the Red Sox was huge it allowed Boston to keep pace with the Yankees and Rays who both won. With the win, Boston is 3.5 games up on the Athletics for the final Wild Card spot.
