J.D. Martinez will be back with the Red Sox in 2022
There are a lot of uncertainties that surround the Boston Red Sox coming into the off-season. Will Eduardo Rodriguez decide to try and get a big deal in free agency? What is going to happen with Kyle Schwarber? However, one thing is now certain. JD Martinez will remain a Red Sox for the 2022 season at the very worst.
So obviously, this could mean a few things for the Red Sox going forward.
Kyle Schwarber Probably Won’t be Back in 2022
I just don’t see how Kyle Schwarber will be back with the Red Sox in 2022. They play the same position realistically, unless Schwarber wanted to make the full-time transition to first base. But who knows what that’ll look like with the second half Bobby Dalbec had in 2021. As great as it is to have J.D. Martinez back with the Red Sox; I would’ve liked to have Schwarber instead. It’s not impossible to bring Schwarber back, but it honestly may be doubtful at this point.
Could JD Martinez be Traded by the Red Sox at the Trade Deadline?
This is not out of the realm of possibilities. If the Red Sox want to trade JD because he’s on the last year of his contract, why not do it? It’s probably likely JD doesn’t sign with you long-term after 2022. So why not get some value out of him? Chaim has done a lot for crazy things so far. Who’s to say he couldn’t pull off that trade as well? Keep replenishing the farm system by any means necessary!
In Conclusion
J.D. Martinez will be excellent in the DH role for the Red Sox in 2022. After that? The future is unknown. Martinez has done a lot of good in his time with this Red Sox team. Enjoy him next year and then be ready to move on!
