Is Collin Morikawa Golf’s Next Superstar?

A Meteoric Rise to the Top of the Game

As The Open Championship progressed on Sunday Morning, one thing became apparent; Collin Morikawa has ice water in his veins. By the end of day, he stood alone as the winner of the 2021 Open Championship. Morikawa finished the championship at -15, two shots ahead of runner up Jordan Spieth. He dissected Royal St. George’s Golf Club with surgical precision, and much like a surgeon, kept a steady hand when he needed it most. As impressive as this victory is, this may be just the beginning of a historic career.

What is Greatness in Golf

When we talk about golf and about the greatest players in the game, it boils down to Major Championships. Having the ability to perform your best when the lights are the brightest is something that typically takes time to develop if it develops at all. Ask Lee Westwood, who has won the European Tour golfer of the year 4 times in 3 decades as well as racking up 27 wins between the PGA and European tours but has never won a major, or Sergio Garcia, a 16 time PGA tour Winner but did not win his first major until he was 37, how important majors are. Because they struggled to win the Majors, they will never be looked at in the same light as other great players from their era like Vijay Singh or Ernie Els, let alone a Tiger Woods Or Phil Mickelson.

Collin Morikawa in Uncharted Water Regarding Golf

Collin Morikawa has done some things that have not been done before. He is now the first person to win two majors in their first try. This is especially impressive in The Open Championship. When Collin won the PGA Championship, the venue was used for the first time in a major. It was also with no fans at the course do to Covid 19. Because there was no fans, there may have been less pressure to perform. When it comes to The Open, Royal St. George’s is in the normal rotation. Not only is it a course that many have played before, but this was Morikawa’s first time playing Links golf. Morikawa is the first man since 1926 to win 2 majors in his first 8 starts. He also joins a list of 8 men to win 2 majors before the age of 25.

What Seperates Collin Morikawa From the Pack?

In a time where there is seemingly an endless supply of guys bombing drives 350, Collin gets it done in a different way. I think the key to his future success is his ball striking and his mental fortitude. The one thing he does better than anyone on tour is judge distance with his irons. Because he strikes the ball consistently pure, he is able to attack flags with more precision. The other massive strength that he has is his brain and the ability to focus on one shot at a time. He put this on display all weekend, opting to hit less than driver off of many tees. Where as some guys like Bryson Dechambeau tried to out muscle the course and failed, Collin out thought the course and succeeded. He also had the mental stamina to grind out pars on Sunday when he needed them most, getting up and down from some horrible positions. Every player on tour is going to hit bad shots, but the ones who rise to the top are able to forget the bad ones and move on to the next.

What is Up Next For Collin Morikawa in Golf?

For Collin Morikawa, hopefully plenty of beers out of the Claret Jug followed by many more majors in the game of golf. For the rest of the tour, they head out to Minnesota for the 3M Open. Some big names are due to be in the field, like Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Tony Finau. Keep an eye out for my 3M open preview blog to see who I like to win.
