Grading the Celtics moves at the Trade Deadline

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and the Boston Celtics were very busy. They sent a total of seven players elsewhere and got back two in return. So were the moves worthy of being called good? Was it a situation where we thought the Celtics got worse after the deadline? Well, let’s put the deals out on the table and grade them for our beloved Boston Celtics.

Celtics Trade Deadline Move #1: PJ Dozier, Bol Bol, a future second round pick, and cash to Orlando for a future second round pick

This was a really good trade by the Celtics to get money off the books. One of the obvious goals of the trade deadline for the Celtics was to get under the luxury tax. This move certainly helped with that goal. Both PJ Dozier and Bol Bol are out for the season. The move makes sense, it’s just a shame the Bol Bol era came to an end!

Grade: A-

Move #2: Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, and a 2022 first-round pick; protected 1-4 to San Antonio for Derrick White

This move was a little bit surprising to me. Josh Richardson was having a fine season off the bench for the Celtics. Romeo Langford was a piece that a lot of Celtics personnel seemed excited about for the future. Plus, the first round pick is a bit surprising as well. Derrick White is a nice bench player for the Celtics. But I would’ve expected more for the package they gave up. Or even give up less? Maybe? Anyways, we’ll see what the 27 year old White can do in this Celtics system.

Grade: C+

Move #3: Dennis Schröder, Enes Freedom, and Bruno Fernando to Houston for Daniel Theis

I’m not going to sugarcoat it, the trade confused me a bit. Dennis Schröder was going to get traded, we all figured that. But what nobody really expected was for the guard to go to a non-contender. Houston isn’t in any position to win a title right now. Enes Freedom wasn’t playing much and Bruno Fernando was in between Boston and the Maine Celtics. Daniel Theis is no stranger to Boston. He can defend the pick and roll well and can do the dirty work. But do the Celtics really need Theis back in the fold? I personally don’t think so. But maybe an off-season move is coming down the line.

Grade: C-

In Conclusion

The trade deadline was a weird one for the Celtics. It served the purpose of getting rid of lower-end bench guys. But we won’t really know right away if the Celtics got better or worse after the trade deadline. Would I like to see a bigger move this off-season? Absolutely. But, I’m also happy the Celtics were even active at the trade deadline. Small victories, I guess.

Final Grade: B-
