Golden Knights East Road Trip Recap

Last night the Golden Knights back east road trip came to a close. After a 8 game homestand they set off this week to face what I think was their hardest stretch of road trip games. As a Golden Knights fan I was nervous about this one. But am very impressed with how it turned out. This is a Golden Knights east road trip recap.

Golden Knights 1 Vs Capitals 0

On Monday 1/24 the Golden Knights east coast trip began with a trip to play the Washington Capitals. I don’t know about anyone else but this is probably one of my least favorite teams. I will never forget Golden Knights first year playing them for the Stanley Cup. The Capitals currently stand at 57 points and sitting in the wild cards top spot for the eastern conference. This was who I think was the easiest matchup on the road for the Golden Knights.

Despite thinking this could be the easiest matchup you can not underestimate Ovechkin, who like usual has been on fire this season. Then Golden Knights they did something incredible, they gave the Washington Capitals their first shutout of the season. The highlight was Amadio getting a goal and Lehner recording 34 saves. 2 points to start the road trip was exactly how the Golden Knights needed to start.

Golden Knights 3 vs Hurricanes 4 (OT)

Back to back games! On Tuesday 1/25 the Golden Knights took on the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are a hot team this year! Having played 41 games and winning 30 of them. They currently sit in 1st place in the Metropolitan division with 62 points. After just coming off a thrilling win against the Capitals I did not know how the Golden Knights would do with this one.

The 1st period remained a good matchup but no goals were scored. The 2nd on the other hand saw the Golden Knights down 2-0 but Patrick was able to score late to make it 2-1. The tale in this game with the 3rd period. On a power play Aho scored to bring the Hurricanes up 3-1. But what happened in the last half of the 3rd period a goal by Howden and a goal by Hague. Golden Knights were able to successfully tie it up to force a overtime. Sadly, the tale and comeback ends there. At 3:49 in OT Aho scored his second goal of the game to give the Hurricanes a win. If you are like me though you will take the point! 2 games into the road trip and Golden Knights had secured 3 points.

Golden Knights 1 vs Panthers 4

The east coast road trip continued on 1/27 with a visit to Florida to play the Panthers. I do not know about anyone else but the Panthers being this good this year is a shock to me. Currently they sit at 67 points and on top of the Atlantic division. This team was the matchup I was most worried about. Which I was right to assume given the score.

But the score of this game makes it seem like the Panthers played a much better game then the Golden Knights this was in fact not the case. The first goal of the game came from Whitecloud which turned out to be the only goal the Golden Knights would score. In the 3rd the Golden Knights were down 2-1 until the empty net approach happened. After Lehner was called off the ice the Panthers scored not 1 but 2 empty net goals in the matter of 25 seconds between the two. The player of this game was Sam Bennet, he scored 2 of the goals for the Panthers one in the 2nd and one of the empty netters. The Golden Knights leave this game with a loss.

Golden Knights 3 vs Lightning 2 (SO)

To finish off the hard east coast road trip the Golden Knights faced off against the Lightning on 1/29. The Lightning are known for being good (or the cap space). This year is no exception. Currently the Lightning sit at 64 points. This is good enough to be right behind the Panthers in 2nd place in the Atlantic division.

This game was a thrilling one! As the Golden Knights carried a 2 point lead into the 3rd. Honestly I thought if they continued to play like they did the first two periods they could have finished this without an overtime or shootout needed. In the 1st Howden scored, in the 2nd Carrier scored, but in the 3rd the Lightning scored twice. Sending this one into overtime. In the 3rd they were absolutely outplayed the shots on goal very one sided to the Lightning. In fact Golden Knights almost did not get any shots on goal that period that has never happened in team history.

THE TALE HERE HOWEVER IS THE SHOOTOUT! This shootout went into 7 rounds. Roy and Theodore scored in the first 3 rounds, Point and Stamkos scored in the first 3 rounds. This sent into into more rounds. After this was a tale of saves and misses by both sides but round 6 brought a goal by Colton and a goal by Karlsson. Round 7 the fate changed and the shootout ended. BY NONE OTHER THEN MARK STONE! The captain got the thrilling game winning shot.

Golden Knights East Road Trip Recap

So there you have it in what I think was the hardest road trip stretch for the Golden Knights they managed to gain 5 points in 4 games. For who they played this is not bad not bad at all. They left excitement! Pacioretty came back from his wrist surgery. We saw more of a flicker from Howden who gets my road trip MVP award. Every point is important at this point because it is a tight race in the western conference. Currently the Golden Knights sit in 1st in the Pacific with 55 points. Right behind them the Ducks with 54 points. This race is going to be a good one. GO KNIGHTS GO!
