2022 Browns Draft: Potential Defensive Tackle Prospects

This week I want to focus on three Defensive Tackle prospects I like for the Cleveland Browns. The two starters from last season are not expected back due to age/production and off-the-field issues. The interior struggled mightily at times to both generate a consistent rush and shut down the run. So let’s take a look at 3 defensive tackle prospects that intrigue me in this draft.

Perrion Winfrey, Oklahoma

The first thing you notice with Winfrey is his size, standing at six feet four inches tall and weighing in at 291 pounds. In 2021 he started all 12 games totaling 11 tackles for loss, five and a half sacks, and a forced fumble for the Sooners. Winfrey is big, strong, and can be relentless at times from his tackle position. He has a very good motor that pays off when he doesn’t give up on plays and often chases down the ball carrier to make the play.

The Browns had an issue last season where opposing quarterbacks were often able to just step up in the pocket to avoid Garrett and Clowney, with no one there. Winfrey would help to eliminate this problem, he stands his ground and often drives his man straight back in the pocket. He will help to eliminate those plays from happening in the passing game.

At 291 he isn’t a massive lane clogger in the run game but his strength and awareness compensate for that. Winfrey doesn’t give up a lot of ground in either phase of the game. If the Browns draft Winfrey to add to this pass rush they could really see this unit take another step forward. He isn’t a slouch in the run game but his pass rush is where most of his skills shine.

Devonte Wyatt, Georgia

Devonte Wyatt may be one of the best prospects suited to play a true nose tackle in this draft. Standing at six feet three inches and 315 pounds. Wyatt occupies space and is incredibly difficult to move in turn clogging the middle in the run game. The thing that jumps off the film for a guy of this size is how he never gives up on the play. There are more than a few instances where he makes incredible effort plays for his size.

This season Wyatt finished with seven tackles for loss, two and a half sacks, and two forced fumbles for the Bulldogs. Wyatt’s production doesn’t exactly blow you away but you can see his impact on the game. Wyatt doesn’t often get driven back, an issue for the Cleveland Browns that Wyatt could help to fix that issue.

Don’t count Wyatt out in the passing game either, as I mentioned the guy can be relentless. The run game may be where the Browns need him most be he truly rushes the passer well. I just see a guy that won’t give up on the play or be driven back by opposing lines. Wyatt eats up blocks and can greatly help his EDGE rushers to terrorize opposing Quarterbacks.

Logan Hall, Houston

Now let’s look at a guy I like more with every bit of film I watch in Logan Hall. This year he tallied 13 tackles for loss, six sacks to go with 47 total tackles. Logan Hall may be better suited to play more Defensive End in the NFL at six feet six inches and 275 pounds. But I just think this is what the modern-day Defensive Tackle looks like. Offenses have evolved to throw the ball more and more and in turn, defensive lines have evolved to rush the passer more.

This isn’t to say that Logan Hall can’t play the run but his best area of strength is his pass rush. Hall has a swim move that he uses often and to a high rate of success. He explodes off the line of scrimmage, often slips between linemen, and disrupts the play. Hall is a guy that added to a line with two Elite Pass rushers creates a nightmare for opponents.

Logan Hall may need to add a little bit of weight to hold up against the run better. I think that he fits what the Browns want to do on defense. The more pressure you can put on a quarterback the easier it gets for the secondary. He is far from perfect but if the Browns can land him on Day 2 he may help the defense take another step.
